DALLAS - Oklahoma and Nebraska always fought each other for the conference championship during their Big Eight days. But the rivalry cooled once the Big 12 started in 1996, with their battles relegated to regular-season fare.
But it's time to talk about Barry Switzer vs. Tom Osborne, Billy Sims, Johnny Rodgers and the Game of the Century again.
OU and Nebraska will meet Saturday in the Dr Pepper Big 12 championship game at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. The winner advances to the lucrative Bowl Championship Series and will probably play in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1.
The 23rd-ranked Huskers (9-3) clinched the Big 12 North title two weeks ago. The 13th-ranked Sooners (10-2) needed some help. But after Texas A&M upset Texas on Friday, all OU had to do was beat Oklahoma State on Saturday. The Sooners won, 27-21.
OU coach Bob Stoops said it's unlikely running back Adrian Peterson (broken collarbone) will play.
"They'll have to do the bone scan again and assess what they feel, whether it's OK for him or not," Stoops said. "I would say it's doubtful. That would be my feeling today. Now, that may change."
Both teams faced uphill climbs to make their way to Kansas City.
The Huskers have not won the North since 1999. Losses against Texas and Oklahoma State sent coach Bill Callahan's club reeling. But the Huskers rebounded to win their final three games.
"Just getting to the Big 12 championship game with a chance to win it all, that was our goal," Nebraska quarterback Zac Taylor said. "No matter how it happened, we got there."
Many thought OU would go through a rebuilding season once quarterback Rhett Bomar was dismissed from the team in August for violating NCAA rules. But senior Paul Thompson stepped into the void, and OU overcame losses at Oregon and against
Texas to win its final seven games.
"We just needed a break," OU defensive end Larry Birdine said. "I was praying for a break, and we finally got one when Texas A&M won. Our attitude stayed positive, and fortunately, we're going to the Big 12 championship."
Both teams enjoyed wild winning streaks in the series throughout the 20th century. Nebraska won or tied all but three games from 1912 to 1942. Then, OU won every game from 1943 to 1958.
From 1971 to 1976, both teams were ranked in the top 10 at the time of the game. In the `80s, the Big Eight title was decided seven times when the Sooners and Huskers clashed.
Officials at both schools were concerned about being put in separate divisions when the Big 12 started taking shape in 1994. They knew it would end the annual rivalry. Then-Nebraska athletic director Bill Byrne said he wanted the Sooners and Huskers to keep playing every year no matter what.
Under the Big 12 schedule format that was adopted, OU and Nebraska played two consecutive years on a two-year rotation - 1996-97, 2000-01 and 2004-05.
The Sooners won, 30-3, in 2004, but Callahan stirred up controversy by yelling "(expletive) hillbillies!" at OU fans while running off the field. Fans responded by throwing oranges onto the field to signify the Sooners' quest for the FedEx Orange Bowl.
The 2005 matchup was the first time in 44 years that neither team was ranked. OU won, 31-24, for its first victory in Lincoln since 1987. ABC broadcast the game to only 20 percent of the nation.
Omaha World-Herald columnist Tom Shatel wrote a column last week with a simple premise: "Give me back my rivalry."
Thanks to some help from the Aggies, longtime Huskers and Sooners fans are getting exactly what they want.
