West Coast Offense: We've been duped

Remember back 22 months or so ago...we'd just hired Cally, and he reassured us that "the beauty of the WCO is that you can take advantage of the talent that you have..." Hmmmm. Well, seems like instead of taking advantage of the talent we have on the team, we insist on having a "balanced attack", even if it means we get blown out a few games every year.

All of that smack about "using the talent that you have" slowly got spinned away and replaced with "WE NEED MORE TALENT". I call total B.S. on that one.

Also, I'll never forget ole Pedy saying "we're not interested in rebuilding...we want to win, and win now." What he really meant was "I want a complete dismantlement of this proud program. And maybe...just maybe, we can put it all back together. Some day."

Yeah, it's funny how no one brings up those quotes anymore. Personally, I think those things were said to try and placate an irate fan base. I don't think BC and Pud were naive enough to think there wouldn't be growing pains. But I think they both underestimated how far we would fall. I don't think either of them expected us to be where we are right now. The lack of talent excuses didn't get really loud until after the Tech game last year.

It's kind of funny that because we're down again, all the nay-sayers and haters are jumping out and saying "I told you so!" and "remember when this was said!" and "fire them all!" and "the WCO will never work!". But most of the same people will be the FIRST ONES to jump on the bandwagon and cheer and smile when we're winning 9 and 10 games again in a few years. Don't deny it, you'll be back.

Who cares what was said in the past? We haven't been out of any games this year, and though we got behind and had it handed to us at KU, the team if fighting and scratching and trying as hard as they can. Why do the pessimists always have to blame NU for being so bad instead of giving credit to the opposition? Would anybody on this board take our LB's over KU's, or our DB's over OU's? Probably not! They're better. How about our offense or TTech's? And we had chances to win those games.

Take a moment to look at what the future holds. Look at how good our LB's are gonna be w/Steve Octavien back next year and Dillard, McKeon and Ruud a year older. Our CB's a year of experience and another 5* prospect on the way to help. Our rush ends returning w/much of our interior DL as well. On offense, a QB returning, a highly touted RS Frosh waiting in the wings, experience for our great young RB's and definite upgrades to the OL, WR and TE.

This year has been a struggle for all Husker fans, and if you're not going to see the light at the end of the tunnel so be it. We're returning a lot of good players that will be better and more experienced and we're going to be much better, and the rest of the North is not going to improve much if at all. CU loses Klatt, MU loses Smith, K-State just sucks, ISU isn't scaring anybody and KU loses a ton on D. I know the angries are just gonna point out anything negative and piss on whatever they can find to piss on, but most knowledgeable, realistic Husker fans are going to see that the team needs just a little more time before they're ruling the conference and the land once again.

well they arent takin advantage of the running backs imo, because the o-line is the weakness, so to cover up the weakness they have been passing and still gettin manhandled. if our o-line was up to par with the rest of the team mostly they would already be bowl eligible for sure.

So our RB's can automatically open up holes that our O-line can't create? That would be INCREDIBLE coaching!

Watch every game we've played, rarely can our line open a hole for Ross, Lucky, etc...

Funny, I don't remember our offensive line EVER being incapable of run blocking...until Cally came on the scene. We've taken good run blockers and converted them to inept pass AND run blockers. Great going Pedy and Cally!

Hardly. It's not like we've had the OL from 94-95 since then. Incapable and inconsistent are two different things. We've been able to block run plays well here and there, but not really on a consistent basis. Which is one of the difference between a decent line and an outstanding one.

Last year the line held together pretty well. Primarily, IMO, because we had 3 upperclassmen that formed a good core. Now, well, we have a couple upperclassmen but they are much less than stellar. Next year, our line gets even younger. Hopefully they can stay healthy. I am looking forward to getting Andy Christiansen back.

Really? Then how do you explain the blowout losses to Colorado and Miami in 2001, Penn St, Iowa St, Kansas St, Colordo in 2002, Texas, Missouri and Kansas St in 2003. Or do we only count run blocking against Troy St, Utah St, McNeese St, So Miss??

Explain how we were outscored 123-325 in those 9 blowout losses if run blocking wasn't a problem? It sure as hell wasn't our passing game now was it?

I will say it again, just because you are not happy with the sate of the program or have doubts, does not mean you are not a fan. I am definately not happy with the state the program is in and have doubts in the direction it is heading. Yes, I AM STILL A FAN! This is not a black or white issue! Of course people would be happier with 9 or 10 win seasons, DUH! Many speek out of emotion, many truly see this staff not getting the team back to national prominance, and many think that BC and SP should be held accountable for the words speek. DIFFERENCES IN OPINION, DOES NOT MAKE SOMEONE NOT A FAN!!!!!

Who cares what was said in the past?
WOW!!!! I would really rethink this. You mean SP and BC could say and promise anything and it wouldn't matter?
Why do the pessimists always have to blame NU for being so bad instead of giving credit to the opposition?
IMO, the teams we have played have had some good players (I would not dispute this), but they have all been winnable games. Knowing this, it casts doubt on BC's ability to prepare the team and his schemes. Why in the last 3 games, has NU had to try to come back from such large deficits? Questions like this come to mind.

From a player and talent standpoint, things are looking up, but it is how that talent is coached and used that many are questioning.

But most of the same people will be the FIRST ONES to jump on the bandwagon and cheer and smile when we're winning 9 and 10 games again in a few years. Don't deny it, you'll be back.
A positive veiwpoint is wonderful, but it doesn't mean it is always the correct viewpoint. What if in 3 years, NU is still 5-6 0r 6-5, even with all of the talent coming in? Since we're playing the "look to the future card". Isn't it reasonable to say that those who posted concerns now, were justified (I am not talking about idiots that call SP or BC aholes). Those who think more should be being done than just thinking positive and looking to the future, while many are somewhat extreme, IMO their oppinions are just as justified as yours. Someone will be wrong, but neither you nor I knows who that will be.

"block run plays well here there"? have you already forgotten? 35 yards rushing in the last 3 games? that is absolutely HORRIBLE! the WORST! I don't care how good your backs are, if the O line can't block it will be MORE OF THE SAME! SSDD....it will not change very much even next year.....even if we get new O linemen it will take time for them to adjust and learn, especially with Wagner coaching! the run game is pathetic and all but abandoned....
