The option is dead not because of the lack of offesive players suited for the option playbook, but because the overall speed of defensive squads is just too overwhelming for an option attack. Since the option is a slow developing play, nowadays you have big ol' d linemen chasing the qb down from behind. teams like miami and FSU have just too much speed to run the option against. Yea it will work against teams like Baylor and Kansas but not once we get to the bowl games. We had to make the switch. 

i get really sick of hearing this too, it worked against fast defenses in the mid to late 90's like Florida, who was too fast....... Miami, who were too fast.......... hmmm like every team they played in the NC and bowl games were fast and they still won. football is man against man, you match equal athletes up and the system still holds up. not real sure when the option became a slow developing play either, depends on what play your running, but it can strike faster than almost any other play if the QB cuts inside. lack of inside running game and the deep ball is what started killing the option here, less isolation plays, lacking a stud I back, fullback got less carries, and crouch and lord not having much of a nack for chuckin it down field kinda made things too one demensional. big problem here that someone brought up, athletes you need to run a true WCO probably not gonna like NU, because of the area for one, but plus the identity that the program has for being so run oriented. BC is gonna have to adapt better to the talent he gets and has to be sucessful, didnt seem like he did that well last year, hopefully we will see improvement on that in the upcoming year. hadnt posted in a while, really suprised at all the new faces, welcome to all the recent additions.

I will tell you what. You go find another Tommie Frazier, who actually wants to come to Nebraska, be hear for four years, and go to the CFL, and I will ask Bill to run the option again. There is a major difference between the defenses of the mid 90s and the ones today, and its called increased speed and more misdirection. Defensive ends are smaller, or at least faster, and so are tackles. Zone blitzes and constant stunting and shifting at the line make it nearly impossible to pin down blocking assingments, which are huge in the option. Thats why zone blocking is so popular now. All you have to do is shuffle down the lind and kill anyone who gets in your way. I understand that we were operating with less talent then we were in the good old days, and Im sure that an NFL team with a fast quarterback could come in and run the option effectively against college defenses, but the talent gap between teams is less and less, and we, nor does anyone else, have such superior talent that they can overcome a disadvantage stretegically.
