Butler wanted nothing to do with the 335 and Rhule made him stay with it. It makes sense that Butler said he needed better players for a defense he had no interest in running.

I just wish people would pick a side and not straddle the fence. "I believe Matt Rhule is the guy and he'll lead us to the promised land; especially now that he's made coaching changes." Or, "Matt Rhule has shown us who he is. He has a slightly above .500 record overall, with a hideous record against ranked teams. We just had year 3 and we're no closer to competing for titles. We should have encouraged him to take the Penn State job and used the buyout money to get a whole new coaching staff who will emphasize a strong running game and dominating the line of scrimmage."

I just hate people who are wishy-washy. I see a lot of indecision among the fanbase. I don't know how people could still be unsure at this point. Are there still fans that think next year will be dramatically different? 🤷

Because, he's going to be here until you win the lottery and buy him out. So it's a gray area not either or option. Rhule is going nowhere no matter how much you wish it. You have to realize you are poor and your opinion means nothing to the program.

You want rich people to bail out your fantasy opinion. The best you can do is turn off the TV, log off, and don't go to games. Maybe boo if you are there.

Or do we pay a D2 coach and his staff $2-3 million hoping for lightning in a bottle while spending our NIL money on another old coach buyout? Jimbo Fisher is available. We're still paying the last coach to go away. We can't afford two coaches and throw money at stadiums and NIL. Buffet doesn't like football.

According to the national media, Penn State. That's who would have paid us to take him off our hands. Penn State would have saved us a gigantic headache, had they hired him. Then, we wouldn't have to worry about firing him in 2-3 years and paying his buyout.

Nash and Ty, but I knew who you meant. Now worries. Do I think they both improved? No. I do think that Ty improved, but I think Nash took a step back. I think wrestling, while not hurting, din't help him. Ty came on that Sr season with a chip on his shoulder.

Part of my gripe is the lack of recruiting/development of guys under them. Rhule and Co knew that they were gone on in 2 years max. Maybe even after the 2023 season. So 2 years to recruit, 2 years to develop and to say the drop off was anything short of horrible would be a lie. They (Ty) were the DL. And it showed in 2025 without them here. I still think Ty was the wrecking ball that had it humming. One can argue Nash got more double teams which led to Ty creating more "havoc", but TY's stats were much better I 2024. Maybe Knighton and White were the driving force for the success. Maybe it was coaching. And who put the new coaches in? Who promoted Butler as DC? Who fired him? Who hired Bradden? And fired him? And how much coaching does an "asst NFL defensive line coach" in the NFL coach. Rhule took two swings and got two misses on the D staff, that really hurt this season. And he fired the "weak links" and we gave him a contract extension through 2032 IIRC. It's not just one misstep, but a combination that starts to lay a foundation of concern to me with his ability to identify coaches, players, etc....And to quote Cig again, "productivity vs potential". We picked a guy who was 58-70 (college/NFL) as a HC to come here...Yes he turned 2 programs around, but would he have kept them at that level. And I defended his record at Carolina as a Panther fan and a Bill Tepper hater.....And Carolina still struggles....So that's on Tepper 😀

We have been so bad for a decade that Rhule's back-to-back winning seasons and bowling is great. And he deserves praise for that. But digging into who we beat, how we lost, etc...I'd expect more and hope for more. Hoping the new DC and scheme can get the D turned around. Hoping the NIL budget Rhule got does something. 2024 should be the put up or shut up year. No more excuses. BUT, new DC, new DL coach, new QB (probably), tougher schedule (3 teams from this years CFP), replacing AA RB etc.....Will all be offered up.

I’ll keep it pretty simple he’s not a good coach but we have to keep him a couple more years because Dannen is a bad AD and gave him an undeserved extension and after the buyout is low enough both will be gone, and there’s also no moratorium on bitc__ng about him because he’s that bad.

Unfortunately those are not the only two choices. It’s only that black and white if you choose it to be.

At what point in time was it necessary for a person to arrive at your choice A or B? Last game? 3 games ago? Last season? The day he was hired (like many here)?

Apparently I’m wishy washy so you’re not gonna like me. But honestly I’m fully tired of the constant changing of head coaches. Not one of them since TO left has helped or been the answer. So excuse me for not lighting the torch or getting my pitchfork out yet. Silly me, I figure since he’s not going anywhere for at least another season, as a fan I might as well hope some of the coaching changes he has made will yield results, maybe we’ll bring in some desperately needed talent and maybe, just maybe, he will get things headed in a better direction. But if a person’s attitude depends solely on the 2026 W/L record and making the playoffs, I already know that person is going to be an unbearable PITA for the foreseeable future.

How can you not straddle the fence?

There's a lot of logical space between comparing Matt Rhule to Moses and demanding his immediate firing.

I don't think next year will be dramatically different, but I also don't know which program-saving coach would take the job and make the difference. Nor can I pretend to know how the ongoing portal crap shoot is going to shake out. College football has never been more unstable.

Sometimes indecision is just being honest enough to admit you don't know shitt.
 
The thing I have learned through bowl season is that last several coaches here have been going about it all wrong with regards to building a team. After listening to the announcers and watching Miami on the field, we need to be building the team from the inside out rather than the outside in. Being a former OL and OL coach, Cristobal put most of his early recruiting efforts into both the OL and DL. This is the approach Nebraska needs to take. It might lead to ugly low scoring games the first couple of years, but long term it will serve the team better. If you can't win the trench war, it really doesn't matter how great your skill positions are. Miami's DL is ferocious. Never in a million years did I think I could cheer for Miami, but I'm hoping it's Miami and Indiana in the NC.
