What Did We Learn - Ohio State Edition

I love what Butler showed but it is easier to make plays when you're not blocked at all.

Just think of how our OL would get roasted if we allowed this.

I have been impressed with how disciplined our defenders have been this year with getting their hands up but still rushing the passer.  Probably expecting a lot from a guy this big but this seems like the first time we've really failed to execute that.

I'm pretty critical of Hartzog.  And I think his other INTs are more just happening to be in the right place at the right time.

But this was a really nice read.  And maybe a better return.

Four-man rush nearly gets home (in a hurry) and we have two guys on the short route.  Can't ask for much better than that, even though a good throw probably converts.

Sorry, I think this is my last one. This is what it's supposed to look like! Notably this was Neyor and not Banks, so maybe that's something. Barney maybe could have done even more, he comes to a stop after catching it probably preparing himself to get lit up. But no one is there, and he gets 10 yards.

I can't see the bottom of the screen, so maybe this is what we did. But it would be cool to overload the right side in a play like this and have Lloyd come in motion to take this pass.

Keep Barney way out wide to draw attention away from where the ball is going.

There's a few interesting things on this play.  White is running a scrap exchange with Butler and the Nickle Gifford.  Common to see it with the Edge player and ILB, never seen it from a late showing blitz from a hole S position before.  This should tell anybody scouting OSU this is 100% a readless OZ play because this blitz is 100% designed to fool Howard into keeping this and run smack into Gifford.  Howard is never reading Giff on this play.

The second part is White is running a scrap exchange into the teeth of the play w/Princewill.  This is exclusively a backside technique.  Princewill slips the OT's block inside, stands the H-back up, and allows Butler to clean it up easily.  Without this on the play side, this play is a Butler foot race from being off the edge rather easily.

It's been said OSU knew what was coming on a few of NU's screen's, this combination of defensive calls looks like White was on the headset with Kelly when this was called.  He had this play ate up 3 different ways.

I agree with you here that’s it’s a straight give.  The quarter in which the play was called is also important as it’s designed to get a look at how NU is playing that run look for later in the game where Will would probably have a read option in the play call.

I didn’t watch the game as I was at the zoo with the family, but was listening and heard Will had more keeps on their game winning drive so I’d have to go back and watch to see if those plays were built of this look (without the interior NU exchange to the outside)
