***** What Did We Learn: Southern Miss Edition *****

Offense is good.

Special teams are bad

Defense is terrible. Found a way to stop the run. Be so bad a pass defense teams don't run. Genius!
hm? Strange as I metioned last week that our special teams were the worst part of our team and should have been the best and I was called 'ignorant' for saying something about special teams mistakes, etc. Today they seemed to be better, but for the on side kick and a chip shot FG. Still, disappointed in the punting. Only averaging about 42 per punt from our 'great punter'. We need to add about 6 to 8 yards to the NET PUNTING AVERAGE and add considerably to our kick and punt returns. Certainly don't give up any more fake punts (just a poor throw from a good one and on side KOs).

I am hating this defensive philosophy. Sorry, but come one. What is there to like so far? Even the good looks bad at points. The bad looks really bad.

Overall, if we punch in just 2 of those 5 field goals in the first half for a touchdown this is a blowout. Nothing on the defense really surprised me, we expected Southern Miss to be able to throw the ball, and knew they would score in the 20's. Was very surprised that Southern Miss didn't start the first half going air raid. We have to be better in the red zone, that is something that we can fix. The pass defense and penalties at this point seem to be who we are as a team.
Right, I think that's a fair take.

Credit some to the other team, too -- as with the Huskers D forcing field goals on Miami, that saved a blowout.

The defense nor the entire team...neither looks too capable right now. We'll have to hope they get better as the year goes on, or Year 1 is going to be ugly. We all hope and expect to see better than ugly.

If I didn't know any better, I'd think we were in a 5-2 all the time with the way we're getting bombed on.

Oh, and it's official now.

We have the worst pass defense in the country.

Southern Miss also got a real gift of a TD there late. Yes, they earned it, but that should have been a pick at the goalline and zero points, and perhaps kept the game from getting interesting.

Still, it wasn't a good showing that a call like this could've made a difference in the final result.

Illinois is going to be a test. How humbling.

Tommy played another good game... 431 total yards and 3 TDs.

Janovich is a real good football player....121 yards today was exciting to see

Freedom is getting better and better. Probably our best rush end

Defense gave up 11 yards on the ground, and dialed up some corner blitzes

Defense got beat for almost 450 in the air

Defense gave up 21....actually 28 after Kalu's INT was overturned for questionable PI call

Not a beautiful win. Knew it would be close. Got the job done.

I don't know what his motivation is ,but Sam has really put this team in a funk with his negativity.

What I learned is that every upcoming game could be between a loss to a blowout....the defense just is not good.

Yeah, it was a really bad call. Still, the offense was listless for a quarter and a half, and the RZ playcalling was... bad?
