I'm sure some people think I'm anti-Dowdell. That's not the case. But I also think some people get so hyped up at seeing a back run over someone that they think that is the greatest thing any back could do.
This play is a good example of what I've been saying. He runs hard. That is absolutely true. And that counts for a lot.
But it also means he really only gets what the line blocks for him (plus a little fall-forward on the tackle). There was a great seam created by the line. And he burst through it and finished the run. But any attempt to make one guy miss probably gets at least a few more yards and maybe a lot. Instead, all he does is try to hit the first guy that he sees. He doesn't even try to get the extra yards.
You are not anti, and when it comes to mentioning Dowdell, the air gets a little thicc. Husker people love him.
He doesn't have the moves or open field juke like Rahmir or Emmett Johnson. He doesn't have break-away speed to go 50 or farther.
But Dowdell hits the hole hard.
If there is no hole, he is giving you a powerful run for no gain.
If the line gives him a hole for 6 yards, Dowdell runs hard and powerful through it for for 6 1/2 yards.
If the OLine gives him an opening and he has 8 yards before he gets hit, he will give you 8 1/2 yards of power. Like a train.
He doesn't have any elusiveness, and doesn't break tackles or out runs anyone. When there is contact, its forceful but he goes down right away.
Fortunately, I think this will work in the B1G and also, he has a lot of time in front of him to improve and become a better running back.
And, when he comes out of the offense, you already know it could be a pass play and someone else will be in to block.
I just don't want you to think you are alone in seeing it. Just didn't want to point out the obvious.
