What did we learn

Going back and watching through the game...

Our offense only scored 21, but we were a hair away from a full on rout.

• The drive with the wheel route to a wide open Lloyd (?) right off his fingertips resulted in zero points, 2-3 inches away from another 7

• After going 3 and out, I really like the playcalling on the second drive of the second half, but unfortunately had a 19 yard pass to Barney called back and ultimately resulted in Raiola's pooch punt

• First drive of the fourth quarter on a 3rd and 20 Raiola had a pass to Banks that would've had 4th and 5 from the 23 that Banks just dropped. Would've been either a field goal attempt or a manageable 4th to go for it on.

• Next drive Barney's 51 yard catch and run was called back because of Rahmir's perfectly legal pancake block. They gave us a makeup call on a roughing the passer, then Rahmir's 69 yard touchdown run got called back as well.

They announced Rahmir, but the holding on Barney's was on Bonner. You can argue that he didn't actually restrict the defender's movement because the defender wasn't moving (and it certainly was not as bad as many no-calls from their O-Line), but this is going to get called when it happens right in front of the runner:

Scott's was actually worse, he straight up tackled the dude:

We can definitely be mad that these got called while a bunch of just as legitimate holding penalties on Colorado's OL were ignored. But they were both definitely holding by the letter of the law, and happened right in front of the ball carrier both times. I personally think you let Bonner's go since the defender was flat-footed and Bonner just didn't let go in time when his legs got rolled up on, but that's a tough call to make in the moment - it's a clear jersey pull on a guy staring at the oncoming runner. You can watch them back because my screenshots are pretty bad, but they were easy and technically correct calls.

Think they want to kick it short because if they return it, it's less likely to get to the 25. Issue is, Horn is too good of a returner, that we should've bombed it every time. Boomschini can kick it through the end zone.

We purposely don't kick it through the endzone. From what I understand Rhule wants to force the returner into a decision and potentially down the ball inside the 25 

 
Wasn’t aware.  Thanks both of you.  I don’t like that strategy to maybe gain 5-7 yards.

thought we’d have way better coverage if that was our strategy.

I don't get rationalizations like this. You watched the game, I presume, and saw at least a dozen holding calls on Colorado that weren't called.

"...this is going to get called..." is obviously untrue. It gets called when the refs choose to call it.

I get it.  I’d rather play conservative.  If I got a kicker that can blast it, I’m doing it every time unless I NEED some kind of play.

This could have also been Rhule knowing the CU offense was trash and he didn’t need to be conservative.

 
Does having an open audition for a long snapper mean that’s the problem with Alvano?  Maybe it was sarcasm.
 

 I’m not actually sure who snaps for field goals.

This is where I am at too.  The risk/reward isn’t that great.  Potentially gain 5-7 yards if everything works out well vs potentially give up 60 yrd return or a TD return if things go bad.

Just hearing some things and watching the games, it appears that the long snapper this year has problems with pace in getting the ball to the holder on FGs and the Punter. There was another punt that was almost blocked if Colorado had rushed with any intent. Then with field goals, you'd probably want the snap to get to the holder asap and have it consistent every time.
