LAWRENCE, Kan. -- When Kansas football fans Owen and Lisa Foust headed to the Jayhawks' season opener last Saturday, they bundled up 3-month-old daughter Kate to go along.

But when they presented their tickets at the gate, they were told they would need an additional $35 ticket for Kate.

"I just thought it was pretty tacky," Owen Foust said. "It's just a grab for money."

Kansas actually began enforcing the babies-pay policy three or four years ago, said Kansas associate athletic director Jim Marchiony.

"Everybody needs a ticket regardless of age," Marchiony said. "The very small children come with backpacks and bottles and toys. ... We've received numerous complaints over the years from people who are sitting next to those people -- enough for us to know that even those sized children need the space."

And, Marchiony said, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has recommended that organizations require tickets for everyone at large events as a way to keep track of numbers.

The Fousts, both University of Kansas graduates, said they didn't mind paying something for Kate to get into the game, but they didn't think it should be a full-priced ticket.

"This is supposed to be a family-friendly environment," Owen Foust said. "I don't think that policy promotes that [environment] much."

Kate -- and any child under 3 -- would be able to get in free for a Kansas City Chiefs game.

"It's a question of the actual seat," said Chiefs spokesman Bob Moore. "If there's no one sitting in the seat, then there's no reason to sell the seat."

Moore said he believed most professional football teams have the same policy.

Fans under 2 also can get in free to see the Missouri Tigers or Kansas State Wildcats play, and those under 1 don't pay for tickets at Iowa State.

"We just felt like a 1-year-old doesn't take up that much room," said Matt Johnson, director of ticket operations at Iowa State. "We get calls all the time saying: 'Thanks for not making our 2-month-old pay."'

But Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas all charge for babies who are brought to games.

"Our stadium is sold out on a season-ticket basis with a long waiting list," said Keith Mann, spokesman at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. "Everyone has to have a ticket."

Making exceptions for babies "leads to too much decision-making at the gate," said Kenny Mossman, athletic department spokesman at Oklahoma.

Texas women's athletic director Christine Plonsky argues that safety is an issue.

"The ruler here of stadium and game management is our fire marshal," she said.

The Fousts say the policy won't dampen their Kansas spirit.

"Kate will probably go to some games," Owen Foust said. "And we certainly want Kate to be a KU graduate someday."

Great contract in my opinion. Never had a winning Big XII season. Never won the north. This guy is one of the best coaches of all time, and his team is reminding me of USC when they on the title a couple of years ago. :sarcasm

chicken sh#t policy.........you have to pay $35 for a child? :WTH

I can see both sides of the point. Sure kid's don't take up much room, but they DO take up some room. Let's just say it's not easy for everyone to fit in the 18 inches they give you at Memorial Stadium. You start letting kids in for free, space will start evaporating quickly.

Babies? Who brings a "baby" to a football game at a stadium like Memorial? I wouldn't.

Full price is bull crap, but I understand with making people buy a seat. Memorial Stadium is crowded enough with just regular size people. It is even worse with people bringing in infants plus a bag full of god knows what and trying to get into what the stadium calls two seats. I've sat by many of people with little kids and bags with their whole toy box in it, and while I stand I would rather not have my feet ankle to ankle because of a huge bag that takes up all of my leg room.

Exactly my point. :thumbs

This is lame. I can see making them pay for a kid that is going to take up a seat but a 3 month old. That is weak and just a way to get more cash. If you have to pay for a 3 month old does that mean the blue hairs with their oxygen tanks have to pay more because their tanks take up space? How about some of the HUGE people that I've seen in the Stadium? They take up more space then any 3 month old would. Also the crap about bringing in toys and the such, if you have to bring a 3 month old to a game you should only need a few diapers, some bottles or the two just pack the boobs.

I wouldn't take a young child, let alone a 3 year old, into a football stadium anyway. I'll wait until my kid as at least 6 or 7 before I even consider letting him go to Memorial Stadium.

Good point... why bring a kid that one won't remember going to the game and 2 you'll have to worry about running off during the whole game. Also since they probably won't be watching the game they turn into a distraction to other fans. My buddy did take his 3 yr old to the spring game and suprisingly he watched most of the game.

It's bad taste, IMO, to bring infants or toddlers to Husker football games....just like when people bring infants to movie theatres. I never understand why people do that? It's inconsiderate of others....People who bring infants (or 2-year toddlers) to a football or movie are too CHEAP to get a babysitter.

So, IMO, it's a great policy!
