What if we don't beat Oklahoma?

i agree with almost everything said on here. BC will be given next year for sure and probably till his contract ends even without improvement. i dont believe he will be fired because as many have stated, i also believe it would be the kiss of death for the next 10 years or so, instability causes recruiting problems and problems aquiring a capable coaching staff that wouldnt have to fear for their jobs in their minds. i would say its safe to say we'll be seeing cally-ball for another couple of years for better or worse, hopefully by then it will be cut and dry about whether he can do it here or not instead of things looking kinda grey. the huskers will win sat. if peterson doesnt get going and bomar has to try to make too many plays, IMO the defense will be able to exploit his inexperience if he is put in that situation, if peterson gets going the huskers may be in for a tough battle.

I think it would be irresposible to not give Callahan the remainder of his contract.  If nothing else recruiting has improved.  I believe the quality of play has, and will continue to improve as well.  Firing Callahan at this point would do nothing but hurt the program.  You could see to a certain extent last year that not all players were willing to buy into a new system and were bitter about the change.  Doing this for a second time would do nothing but cause more trouble.  If at the end of his contract he has not shown that he is able to keep Nebraska in the top of the big 12, he will most likely be let go.  But personally I believe we are on the right track :)
I think that the real question here is, if things dont get headed in the right direction, how long does he get? Next year should tell more, as the level of competition will likely be better. Has the team improved, statistically speaking, they have on special teams and some on defense (until they played a good offense). Offensively, even though ZT seems to have a better grip of the offense than JD, it has not really added up to results on the field.

Even if billy c and co. keep NU in the top 10 in recruiting, if vast improvements do not tranfer to the playing field, how long will he get??? Even though regime change can hurt the program, if they never make it back to the upper echelon, when do you decide to cut ties???

You're right FF,

When the program reaches that perceived point you have to pull the trigger. (Pud)SP did that already two years ago. May have to do it again in another three years. Right now beating the Sooners is JOB 1 (not biblical). <_<

GBR BEAT THE SOONERS

You say next year the teams we play get tougher. Who on next year's schedule really improves? I'll give you Texas will be tougher than any southern opponent we've faced this year, but A&M is about on par with Baylor this year and OSU just sucks. MU will be down after losing BS. KU will still suck. KSU might be a tad better. CU will be down after losing their sr. QB. ISU will still be just ISU, maybe better maybe worse. We do get one tougher non conference game with USC.

Next year, we probably lose to USC and Texas. Other than that, I think it's wide open just like this year. So, we start the season out with 2 sure losses. However, we could just as easily run the rest of the schedule with only two losses. I don't think this shows where we are because again most of the teams we will play will suck. If we get blown out by USC and Texas, I think this will be the tell tale sign of whether or not we're really improving. Losing by 30 or 40 to those 2 teams will tell me we have a long way to go to get back on top!

I agree with great recruiting doesn't always equate to great play on the field. Look at Ohio State. For years, they were right up there in talent and actually led the NFL in the amount of former Ohio State players playing in the pro. However, they won 0 NC's in that time period until their coach retired. Great recruiting can also be misleading. If we have another top 10 recruiting class but most of the incoming recruits are either QB's, RB's, or positions like that; we really haven't gained much. We need to hit recruits making impacts on the OL, DB, Tight Ends, and positions like that. I still find it absurd that we have 7 QB's on scholly. I'm sure the coaching staff will address this, but did we try to get a good juco Tight End last year when we knew Herian would be out for the better part of the season? If we fill some huge holes this offseason, I'm sure this coaching staff will figure out how to utilize them.

For me, this is the game I circle on the schedule. I have for years. If we don't win this game our season will be shot. We will need to beat Colorado, and we are not a good road team. There has been a lot of talk about improvements this year, however if the record at the end of the year is close or even the same as last year, no one will notice. In college football, its all about W & L's. This team has had a difficult time coming out and making a statement when they needed to. Case in point...we didn't exactly dominate Maine and Wake...then a very disappointing Pitt team came in (a great time to make a statement...Nebraska football is back) we win 7-6. We don't play 60 minutes of football. I mean against Tech, we were down 21-0 before we showed up and played...Missou, we came back and tied the game, only to self-destruct in the second half. Somewhere on this site I read a quote (forgive me, I don't have it in front of me) it goes something like this..."Somewhere someone on this team has to say...DAMN IT THIS IS NEBRASKA." My concern is, we don't have leaders on this team, players who will get in each others face and say we need this game. Boys, we do need this game...we aren't the program we used to be, where every game we were expected to win, every game is a dogfight...so may we ALL remember...DAMN IT THIS IS NEBRASKA.

:yeah

I agree totally. Ross should be getting a step ladder and kicking every OL in the groin each and every time they miss a block or screw up an assignment. However, times are changing not only in college ball but also pro ball. Now, it seems players are a lot more interested in going somewhere that will get them to the next level. Yeah, they care about whether they win or not but I think they care because winning makes them look more attractive to pro scouts. Traditions and things of this nature definitely take a back seat. It's the same in the pro's. The highest profile players like TO really don't care whether they win or not. It's about the almighty greenback and whether or not they get their incentives. They care more about getting 8 to 10 receptions and getting over 100 yards than they do if the team wins.

I don't think Maurice Clarrett gave two sh#ts and a giggle about whether or not Ohio State won a NC a few years back. He was a lot more concerned about them getting him into the NFL. It's hard to beat into an 18-21 year old's mind the tradition and respect that got them to the university they are playing at especially if they're from half way across the country. I really thought last year Barrett Ruud should have been kicking some tail on the defensive team. He's a Nebraska kid, and he's lived through the tradition. However, it just didn't happen. We don't have a TF back there barking at players screwing up. We don't have a Peters back there screaming at players to get them pumped up. We just don't have the leadership we once had. You can recruit the best players in the country, but that doesn't mean you're going to get one that will lead and others will follow!
