This.

if your receivers have a 1/2 step they are open. but you can't hit them if you are throwing off your back foot or jumping all the time.

 
So Scott tried to establish the run with base handoff running plays from the start. The problem was that the run blocking wasn't great. He then went towards calling downfield passes but we were covered well (no surprise - we are missing Wan'Dale BIG TIME) and also pass protection was more miss than hit.

What I think I would have done if I had been Frost in the second quarter was rolling Adrian out. We didn't see that until the second half, and by that point it was too late to overcome the momentum shift and point differential.

Our offense started clicking fairly well at a couple points in the second half but the terrible special teams, inopportune penalties, and the relatively unlucky scoop & score fumble were way too much to overcome with anything we could have conceivably done on offense IMO.

To add to the litany of mind-boggling mistakes from the game, I'm not sure who is to blame for the confusion on NU's last TD; but we ran a QB sneak on 1st and goal from the 5 - for 1 yard.  We did not realize that the officials had given us a first and goal on the prior play.  So, we wasted one of our 4 tries from the 5.  It took 1 minute and 40 seconds off the clock from the first down to the touch down. It would have been nice to have had another 1:40 on the clock when we got the ball back on the final drive.

That turned into a 19 play, 91 yard scoring drive that took nearly 7 minutes.  That is a fantastic drive when you are up by one score in the 4th quarter.  When you trail by 14 with 9 minutes remaining, however....

Just more fuel on the fire of a poorly organized football team....

on 1 side of the field it said 4th down....on the other side it said first down.   seems the chain gang confusion might have contributed to our confusion

 
AM isn't executing at the level needed to make this offense click. Sure, there are quite a few things that don't help - bad snaps, poor line play, etc. But, Nebraska had open WR's today. Guys with a half a step to a step on their defender. He either couldn't see them, didn't have the confidence to make the throw, or just missed the throw entirely. And it's been that story for four years now. It was excusable as a true freshman and even as a sophomore, but not so much as a senior. We're also talking about a guy that got benched as a junior because of his struggles.

Nebraska doesn't need an elite QB there, but they need better than what AM has to offer... full stop. It's just not good enough.

If you state you have a NFL caliber TE and WR, you target them repeatedly. And who cares if the other teams knows, because unless they have NFL caliber guys in coverage you can count on your guy winning that battle. Then you develop your team off that.

Still don't understand what's with the rotation at WR and RB. If Rahmir was your guy you counted on in crunch time,  why didn't he start? And the scheme. Do you really think Hickman is better at this point than putting another WR in the game? And is your scheme more important than getting your best players on the field? We heard a lot about Betts, don't know if he was even targeted.

You then fire Austin because his o-line is getting whooped year in and out. And then you tell Verduzco to go.

Rahmir was only on the field in crunch time because they were trying to go fast (yet still ran a QB sneak on 1st down) and didn't want to sub.

 
On paper, we have the better talent and experience players compared to Illinois. So, why did we lose? Coaching…Bret Bielema can get more from his players than Frost can ever do with better talent. At the end of the day, it comes down to coaching. If Bielema had our players, he would have run the opposing team out of the field. He was pacing all day and engaging with his players and Frost was treating the game as if it were a red and white game. Really disappointing from someone I have so much respect for.

I think the QB coach and the head coach both need to ride the pine. When the same mistakes keep on happening year after year, and you either can’t or won’t create a solution or a replacement, it’s no longer the player. 

 
The hard part is, it's very hard to voice criticism about this program. Nebraska fans don't want to hear it, even if it's the truth. In their eyes, all of our recruits are 5* future Hall of Famers and our coaches would make Vince Lombardi envious. Any offseason concern or ridicule is met with hostility.
