What is sucess?

Pick your poison..good coach, or good recruiter. Good coaches (BD/TO/FS) have done pretty well at NU (won about 80% of their games) good recruiters won about 50%.
What you forgot to mention was that Deveney and Osborne were ALSO good recruiters, Frank was not.

"Success" is going to be exactly how Steve Peterson defines it. Bottom line.

I'm no defender of Solich, but the man got fired after batting about .750 +\- over his head coach career. Facts is facts. Peterson didn't think that was too successful.

So on we move to Callahan. I believe he's right at .500 +/- as we sit here right now, and will probably be below that mark after the CU game. While I'm willing to "give him another year" in my own mind, I believe that Callahan will never break the .500 mark as head coach at Nebraska, whether he's here 1, 2, 3, or more years. We are hopelessly out-coached most games. Facts is facts. Our talent (although it is generally minimized) will allow us to win a few home games per year, and perhaps one road game per year. We will have to rely on Mr. Peterson to determine if and when the sub .500 mark isn't successful.

However...I would surmise that Mr. Peterson's definition of "success" has probably been modified a bit since he's the one that grabbed ahold of the steering wheel.

I cant really comment on Devaney as a recruiter, but NU never, ever, ever once had a No 1 ranked recruiting class that contributed to a NC season. If I remember correctly, TO had (1) NO 1 class (mid 80s), and the SR class that led to the 94-95 National Championship teams was rated in the 40's somewhere (Graham, Gilman, C Peter, Colman, Ellis, Veland, C Johnson, etc).

What TO did was DEVELOP his players, which is one of the major duties of a coach. He recruited to fit his system, and developed them into great players (remember the walkons???), unlike the current staff which grabs the TOP250 list, offers them all a scholly, hopes they can talk a few in, and win on talent alone. The current staff (in 2 years and 21 games) has not helped this team develop into a better team.
