His mom needs to be banned from any communication to the outside world. She is either a hot head or not a thinker or he has decided to leave. Getting the teams respect is an up hill battle at this point. Unless this was reall out of his control. He may be in rehab, or have some type of personal issue. Probablly just wishfull thinking but MOM needs to stay out until it is all clear. Good luck to him if he is leaveing but no one will give him a free ride to a starting posistion. In the past few months you really have to question his desire to go through the pain, and do what it takes to be a QB at nebraska. Did the doc's ever find a real problem with his shoulder? I'll bet they could have found a few problems with Zack taking the beatings last yr, now there is a warrior that none of us question his dedication and if he is tough enough or not.

If this is just a temper tantrum, then he just dug a hole and dove head first. I don't know if any top D1 school would want to take a chance on someone that did this. We really do not know the story, so for now I just won't vote, accept to cut the phone lines to his mom. She sure as hell didn't help him.

 
Its too bad that his mom said that stuff cuz its certainly going to affect the kid's credibility with the team after she called the unquestioned leader of the offense "ok" and said Beck should be ahead of him. Hopefully the players will just realize that girls talking football is pretty much an oxymoron.

Personally I feel Cally should give an honest effort to get Beck back to practice. The kid does have ability and he could be a vital part of this team the next few years if he just learns to be patient and to compete instead of expecting to have the position and respect handed to him. I don't think anyone questioned who was going to be the man when Taylor left and that possibility hasn't disappeared yet.

However, if Beck comes back I think he has to be punished in some way. I feel this is absolutely necessary because if Beck comes back he'll be labeled a prima donna and a whiner. Cally may also be second guessed as a coach who will give in to tantrums. By punishing Beck in a manner that isn't humiliating but also severe Beck can retain some dignity by coming back to practice and facing the music and Cally maintains the respect of his players and shows that tantrums and calls from mommy won't be tolerated.

Personally I would relegate him to the scout team quarterback for the next 2 or 3 weeks. This would fittingly punish him and at the same time possibly "justify" in his mind why he's not getting the majority of the repetitions. Any time spent with the top units would seem more and more like an opportunity to prove himself instead of a slight by the coaches. I'd also probably suspend him for the 1st game just to make sure there wasn't any confusion about who the boss is.

The character of an 18 year old kid is something that changes dramatically through college, which is why I wouldn't give up on him yet. Maybe he just needs encouragement to cut the umbilical cord so he's not having his ego stroked by mommy every time he talks to her.

 
Sorry, I don't agree with pandering to babies. It just perpetuates the behavior. I think Callahan should be firm. You want to be a team player, then come back, apologize to the team, and accept any punishment like a man. Otherwise....walk. It will send a message to other recruits - if you want to play Nebraska football, you better act like man and be a team player. Beck's behavior pisses me off. I voted for letting the prima donna walk.

 
y'know, just the other day i made a post stating that i admired beck's level of maturity... and less than 12 hours later he grabs his football and runs home.

maybe i jinxed it?

okay, experiment... say positive things about other NCAA teams and see what happens...

I'd like for Callahan to have a talk with Beck and come up with something to keep Beck from the team. Have those two work things out and find out if things work out that way.

Well they had their talk and from what I understand they both found it hard for him to come back after the comments his mom made.
