Riddle me this? Does any other program, with their top tier recruiting, have a shot at repeating the dominance of the mid-90s Huskers? Or has college football moved to a point where no-one can put together that long a string of dominance?

Would you consider a 5 year period? Or a decade? If 5, then USC, has to be there, Florida just started to dominate, OU was there for two/three years.

MNC in three of 4 contiguous years. Seems that's the measure of NU in the Mid-90s.

 
If you're talking about the 60-3 record over 5 years then USC came within one game of that through last season. If they win it all this year then they'll have 3 in 5 years.

 
I think what skersfan was trying to say was what Nebraska did in the 90s was pretty magical. It was a hell of a run that can only be compared by few others. I don't think it is impossible for another team to have a run like that (USC). But for us to set our goals that high is just setting ourselves up for failure. I honestly don't think Florida will get anywhere near what we did. They have a ton of talent of their team this past year, but they got lucky as hell to get in the Championship game. All it takes is one bad game or one bad bounce of the ball for a championship contender to be a pretender.

LOL, how soon we all forget. Anyone remember the "luck" that was involved in the 97 season when we played Mizzou? I mean the ball bounced off of one player and another was just lucky enough to be there just to get us into OT. How about the Wyoming game in 94. If it weren't for a botched punt reception by Wyoming, we easily could have lost that game. I don't remember the year, but what about Mason @ KU going for 2 instead of the extra point that would have ended in a tie? There is a fair amount of luck and the ball bouncing your way almost any year you play for the championship.

Take a questionable call or two when Miami played and lost to Ohio State, and you easily have Miami with the success NU had in the mid 90's. USC easily matches up with NU's run. Oklahoma does as well except they dropped two of the NC games.

There will be teams with similar success to NU's mid 90's run in the future. It may be a little harder due to the money being thrown around in the NFL, but it will be matched again.

Luck aside, I really doubt that any one team will be able to put that much of a string together again. 3 MNCs in 4 years. That was magical and there was an element of luck to the magic. But, with players AND coaches jumping to the NFL and to other teams so fast, I just don't see it happening.

However, we can always hope that somewhere deep down in the Sea of Red, there lurks another run like that. We CAN hope.

USC had a chance for 3 out of 4 this year but blew it with sloppy play against Oregon State and UCLA. They might have been the most talented team this year in college football but they didn't bring their "A" game for all 60 minutes in 13+ games. It takes a lot of luck and a lot of cards to fall right just to get a shot at one national title let alone three in four years. It is not impossible of a feat but highly unprobable.

 
As much as I hate to see it , if Dennis Erickson has any thing left in his coaching tank, watch out. Phoenix area just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Over 5 mil there now. They are raising hell up there about losing kids to USC and Nebraska. Lets hope the kids we got out of there this year have good carriers for the Huskers, that will help to keep pulling them out of there.

Nebraska is limited by poputlation. We had a tremedous run, but not likely to happen again.

Recruiting, weight training and coaching have all changed. Scholarships and Big 12 academic rules have changed.

Miami, Florida, FSU,Texas, LSU, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, SC all have a greater chance of it happening than Nebraska. Not doom and gloom by any means, just the chances are not as good as those programs. Their recruiting is much easier from established population basis.

Of the ones I think have the best chance, Notre Dame would be last, SC, LSU, Florida, Miami, Texas are all pretty close to the same, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Tennessee round out the big guns. We will have our fair share of battles and will win more NC's, but my guess is that from now on these are the ones that will win the majority. We just do not have the draw that the others do, nor the population.

 
We do have new facilities that we can offer students. I believe that that is a major draw for getting student athletes here. Never underestimate the value of the waterfall. :lol:

I don't think NU had any better ability to draw in the 80s and 90s.
