So would a pro style offense that doesn't run the ball on 3rd & 1Weird that we're even debating this on HuskerBoard. The notion that RB's shouldn't have to block would make Tom Osborne roll over in his grave.

It really just comes down to decision-making. For example, in the still frame that people are talking about a few posts up (the play is at 32:10 in the video if anyone is interested), Newby simply missed his cut. From my view point, if you watch the play develop, Reeves brings his defender to the ground while Gates/Kondolo are forcing their defenders to the sideline.NUance said:I think Wilbon is the better runner of the two. Newby is not a north-south runner. He heads to the sideline, not the goal line. If we had a better O-line Wilbon would be the starter. And our running game would be awesome. But apparently Wilbon can't pass block. (Or won't?) So we have Newby, the better of the two at pass blocking. But not the better of the two at running the ball. IMHO, that is.
Nebraska punted the ball exactly once last week.So would a pro style offense that doesn't run the ball on 3rd & 1Weird that we're even debating this on HuskerBoard. The notion that RB's shouldn't have to block would make Tom Osborne roll over in his grave.
Just look at how many yards he picked up on that carry. That should tell you all you need to know.Ya I'd like to see multiple screenshots or live video before I could assume anything really.
This is what Ohio St was doing in the playoffs last year. They killed Bama/Oregon with the same power play all night long. It was a beauty to watch. My personal opinion about the running game is to run power out of the spread. That may sound like an oxymoron, but it's really not. Power is a blocking scheme associated with pulling guards, assignment blocking, and using a fullback (when under center) or H-back (when in a shotgun or pistol) as a lead blocker.
It is prob not that he is not good at pass pro but prob doesnt know his assignment. Right now our pass game is carrying our offense so lets not screw that up by putting a guy in their that jeopardizes protection. Like RIley said if you just put him in to run the ball you are tipping your hand on what you are doing offensively. Also, I havent seen anything from WIlbon that makes me think he is a better runner than Newby.I find it hard to believe that Wilbon is that bad at pass-pro that he can't even get on the field. There is more to the situation then not being able to block. Against BYU, he was a kick returner and now he doesn't even get in on that.

You know who else is on record as calling a pass play on 3rd and 1?I must have missed TO going into a grave. So would a pro style offense that doesn't run the ball on 3rd & 1Weird that we're even debating this on HuskerBoard. However, if you went and visited him in Lincoln, I'm sure he would agree that 3rd and 1 is not always a running down.
...and some guys have Marshawn Lynch in the backfield and pass on 2nd and goal from the 3 yard line...having a precedence doesn't make it right. You know who else is on record as calling a pass play on 3rd and 1?
can't be in Riley's dog house, he is too nice to have one.I find it hard to believe that Wilbon is that bad at pass-pro that he can't even get on the field. There is more to the situation then not being able to block. Against BYU, he was a kick returner and now he doesn't even get in on that.
