that it is rediculous that we kickoff the ball short of the endzone? You could problably count on 1 hand how many times weve had a touchback the entire season. I just think its mind boggeling someone on the team regardless if its a kicker or not doesnt step forward and say "here let me show you how to kick this thing where its supposed to be." I realize the kickoff tees are shorter this year, but every other team weve played this year kicks it into the endzone, EVERY SINGLE GAME! Thoughts??

Well, being an ex kicker myself, I can tell you it's not as easy as you think. Yeah, touchbacks are good, but that's like asking how come every pass doesn't go for an 80-yard TD. I've seen quite a few kicks go for touchbacks this year, but you're right- consistency is lacking. I'm more interested in the PAT's and field goal percentages myself, because those mean points.

Besides, fielding a kickoff opens the chances for missed catches & fumbles, no?

We're doing alright...........

If they could kick it into the endzone, they would. Not the end of the world unless coverage breaks down. We have other things to worry about before this.

blah....

I prefer it to be short. I'd rather force them to catch it at the 1 yard line and have to run it out than let them down it in the endzone. As long as our defense can tackle them, we have a better chance of getting them before they hit the 20 yard line.

I think this is a deliberate thing done by the special teams coaches. It seems like their theory is that a lot can go wrong if they have to field it. Muff, fumble, dropped before the 20, etc. If it goes into the endzone, there is no chance to force them into anything. But I don't think we've forced a turnover by doing this during this season, so maybe it's not working.

Congdon doesn't have a big leg, but his first kickoff of the day on Saturday was really bad, and he had the wind with him, so I don't know what happened there.

Yeah the opening kickoff immediately made me feel like crap about the game..........fortunately we turned it around, but you get what I'm saying........I'm not too worried about it even though it would be nice to not give them any extra yards past the 20 if we kicked it out of the endzone. We do get a chance at a turnover if they field the kick though........... :dunno

I don't know why they don't try out Titchner. Normally punters can kick the kickoffs far, so I think they could give him a shot.

They changed the rules and made the tee smaller, 1 inch down from 2 inch, so there would be less touchbacks. And like Drummer, I am much more concerned with the kicking for points, as long as the coverage team does its job, no worries for big returns.

Huskerdrummer, you've been watching another team if you've seen 'quite a few' touchbacks this year, or you are seeing double! I'm an old fart, and I think I could get it in the endzone as often as Cogden does.
