Who wins a footrace...Crouch or Martinez?

Who do you think wins a 50 yard sprint? Crouch or Martinez?

I'm pretty sure it's also not true. I tallied up fumble stats to compare the two and Martinez was way worse. If I still had the data, I'd post it, but I lost it when my hard drive crashed 2 months ago. The only way to get Crouch's fumble numbers was to go through the play-by-play for each game back then. It took a couple hours so I'm not going to do it again.

Also, I don't recall Crouch leading the nation for 3 straight years in fumbles for QBs as TMart has. Throw Crouch in a read-option offense and his fumbles are cut in half easy.
did they not keep individual fumble stats back then? or did you go back and give crouch credit for the bad pitches he'd make that the rb would get credit for the fumble? and if they didnt keep individual fumble stats, your second comment is moot.
I could not find individual fumble stats from back then anywhere I looked. But they did credit the fumbles in the play-by-play summaries to the person who fumbled. So yes, the bad pitches would have been included as far as I can tell. And yes, Martinez was worse, even Crouch's worst year (12 fumbles if I remember correctly) wasn't on the same level as Martinez. And he was running an offense much more prone to fumbles.

Click on the above link, scroll down to the play-by-play summary and then do a control+f for "fumble" and you can see who fumbled during each game. It's a slow process and is a pain in the arse.

If a test of who is more elusive, I would give it to Crouch.

Since we are talking about a footrace, its obvious its a straight line. Both Martinez and Crouch are fast. Taylor has been recorded running 4.3s, but I am not sure if that is an official time. I would say he is at least a 4.40, if not 4.37. I watched a couple videos and used a stop watch on when both players stepped over the 50 yard line and got to the endzone.

I am using Taylor's RS Freshman year, because that is when we know he was absolutely 100%. This is the Kstate game. At 1:22 Taylor goes on a run. I recorded Taylor from the 40->50 yard mark, and he hit that in 1 sec flat. I recorded a few times where it was .9 seconds, but I am going to go with 1second. Taylor running a 4.4, add that 21 sec onto his time, he runs a 50 yard in 5.4s.

I would give the edge to Taylor. This is basing times off of actual game play, when I think players are most explosive.

Not fair to compare that run of Eric's though, he was practically jogging at the end he was so gassed.
Ummm.... if he was gassed, then he should have been caught with 50 yards to go. I timed him going from the 50 yard line to the 40 yard line. I added the time they ran 10 yards with both of them at full burst, and added that time to their 40 yard dash times.

Where did you get the 40 yard dash times from? The assumption I made from your original post was that you timed a ten yard run, and also timed a 40 yard run from their respective videos.

Crouch's I got from the NFL Combine and Taylor's was an average of everything I found on the web. Its hard to have an exact 40 coming out of high school, but even on here, there were reports of him running 4.3's. I bumped it to a 4.4, which could be a little slower, but since there is no confirmed time, I wanted to make it a little more fair. I timed a 10 yard run with both at full sprint and added that to their recorded 40 times. In pads, they of course would be a little slower. Its impossible to find a video where they run over 50 yards without bobbing and weaving before going on a 30 yard sprint while slowing down when they reach the goal line.

Verified numbers from a combine during HS. 4.5 forty and very impressive vert, broad, and shuttle time. He was only 173 at the time, but I'd wager with the good weight he's added and explosive work he's done that he's at least the same, probably better.

I would take Martinez in a straight sprint, and crouch in pretty much any other race. But its awfully hard to compare them because of the style of offenses they ran/run. Crouch ran more of a true option under the center, which means he isnt able to get downhill as fast because he has to move laterally at the LOS. where as Martinez runs more of a spread option mostly out of shotgun/pistol, which means he is already downhill and almost to full speed by the time he reaches the LOS. One thing is for certain tho, they are both fast as hell..........but I'm way faster!!!
