IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa confirmed Wednesday that 13 football players were hospitalized this week with an unusual muscle disorder following grueling offseason workouts.

The players have rhabdomyolysis, a stress-induced syndrome that can damage cells and cause kidney failure in severe cases, school spokesman Tom Moore said at a news conference two days after the players were hospitalized in a Iowa City.

The school has said the players, whom they would not identify, were "in safe and stable condition" and responding well to treatment.

Weird... not to go overboard with baseless accusations, but is this something where performance enhancing drugs could have played a role? Or served as a catalyst?

Read where some past players are saying, "thats Iowa ball", not for the weak. Some also said they know had it not been for the way the program is run they never would have made it to the pro's. Iowa has a reputation for taking not very highly recruited kids and turning them pro, thier motto goes something like, hard work beats talent when talent does not work hard.

There seems to be something stranger than just working hard here. Do you not think Alabama or Florida or Ohio State push their kids to the limits during workouts? But 13 players hospitalized in the same week? That's not something you hear too often, anywhere. Are we to believe Iowa just works their kids harder than all of those schools, not to mention the other 100+ FBS teams?

People are calling for Ferentz's head over this deal. LINK And if you think about, maybe he deserves to be fired. After all, it's pretty tough to put 13 highly conditioned athletes in the hospital. Somebody screwed up big time.

i heard the trainers confused four loko for gatorade in the water coolers, and the athletes chugged it all the same.

Ha ha! Yeah, there's a picture in the Woodshed of one of their players sitting on the curb after practice.

I am not saying there is not foul play here, I am just saying I am not a rumor type person and from what I have heard and read, they push those boys pretty hard.

The bad press just continues to pile up at Iowa. Eventually enough is going to be enough and Ferentz will be let go. From the outside, he certainly emits a "win at all costs" type mentality that the program appears to be built on.
