Why College Football Should Be Banned

College football is separate from academics...it doesn't serve an academic purpose because it isn't mean to serve an academic purpose...

College football shouldn't be banned but it should be able to pay for itself, not from student fees, etc. Plus if that were the case, Nebraska would have about a one in seven chance of winning the National Championship every year, since that is all the teams that would be left.

A better argument could be made for the elimination of 'elective' classes at colleges. As a large part of that guy's argument is football does nothing to prepare people for the business world.

Elimination of Gen. Eds at colleges would be better IMO.

I agree but I would take it a step further and say that by the same reasoning the whole concept of college (all classes) could be eliminated. In many, many fields college is not preparing/educating people for the real world. It is more of a self perpetuating idea that people need a college degree to perform certain tasks/jobs. It's been my experience that there are actually very few careers that benefit from what is taught in college.

The author claimed to not be an anti-sports prude but his writing would hint that he was always the last player chosen as a child and apparently he went to one of the schools, unlike UNL, where the students subsidize the athletic department instead of vice versa.

I look back at my college days and 60 to 70% of the classes I took had nothing at all to do with what I wanted to do, become a CPA. Chemistry, biology geology and several other required subjects were a complete waste of time and the money I worked so hard to get. cut a lot of this stuff as requirements and cut down on the amount of time you spend in school. From 4/5 years to 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 years. Ban football? Somebody needs a lot of help coming up with things to write about. T_O_B

Not to take this too far off topic, but I completely agree. I believe they should allow students to major in more degrees rather than spend 60-to-70 percent of their time taking gen eds. As a broadcasting major, I had to take three "concentrations" or 12 credit hours in three specific fields. I chose political science, English and history. Those concentrations, in conjunction with my degree specific courses, made up about 3/4 of the classes I took. But then there were other classes that I found mortifiningly pointless like calculus, computer science, geography, etc. I put bare minimum effort into these classes because I knew I would never need the information they gave me in order to have a successful career. I did enough to pass with good grades and that was it, barely retaining anything.

I feel I would have been much better served taking more political science and English courses as those subjects apply more directly to my career choice.

When my wife was in college, she had to take glass blowing as an art class or some sh#t. Glass blowing. Yes, that's the kind of bullsh#t we're paying for. And here 7 years later, she never did find a job in here field and yet she found a job on an assemble line and now she's making as much if not more and the benefits are better too.

Thanks Obama.
