Why is Stoltenburg still a DT?

Looking at the depth chart for the Purdue game, he's listed at 6'5 265. That means even on a good day he's giving up 30 lbs minimum to an opposing O-Lineman. Does he just not have the speed to rush from the edge?

He's not particularly fast but he's got a great motor (I know .... he's white ....). But I'm totally serious on that. I would say he's in the same boat as Gangwish. Not the best athlete but will give you everything he's got.

The story basically boiled down to the staff thought he'd be a better "fast" DT than a "slow" DE. I guess I can see that to some extent but I don't understand doing it in a year where we have a bunch of DTs and not very many DEs (he had been playing DE previously).

Stoltenburg is in a year of transition to DT. I understand he might have been used at DE this year, but his future is at DT. He probably would have been a DT in the old regime, too.

He was also listed at 6'5 265 last year. He spent a year in the weightroom and at the training table. I'll bet dollars to donuts he gained some. And it's just not reflected on the current roster.

I would agree. He's probably closer to 280 this year, after eating everything available at the training table. He still looks pretty ripped and in great shape, but still could use a 5-10 more pounds to be a quick DT at 285-290.

We've had to go down the depth chart at DT, haven't we? He's seen quite some time there due to injuries, or at least he must have if they were talking about putting Carlos Davis on redshirt alert.

I think we've had Kevin Williams and Kevin Maurice have extensive injuries and miss significant time. Valentine has missed a couple games with injuries, as well. Stoltenburg has been needed at DT, just as much as he would have been needed at DE.

Stoltenberg was playing snaps in the 4Q against NW.

Stoltenberg said he’s gained 20 pounds since his arrival, and a look at his tree-trunk arms confirms as much.

That’s not the only improvements he’s made, either.

“Mentally, I watch a lot more film, I understand plays a lot more than I did in high school, because you don’t really learn all that stuff in high school,” Stoltenberg said. “Technically, I’m a lot better, too. You don’t really learn too much about these types of techniques in high school.”

When first recruited, the previous coaching staff told Stoltenberg he could play offensive line, defensive line or tight end. Former coach Bo Pelini, the April before Stoltenberg arrived, said he wanted him on defense, and Stoltenberg began playing end.

“When we got the new staff, Coach Hughes told me he didn’t know, if I would play end or tackle, and toward the end of spring ball he told me tackle,” Stoltenberg said. “I kind of like tackle a little more now, just because that’s what I’m used to at the collegiate level. I’m fine where I’m at for sure.”

At 285, Stoltenberg feels it’s easier to anchor down on double teams and take on blocks. Plus, the weight gain didn’t come at the expense of his family’s grocery supply.

“I think my mom’s happy she’s not paying the bills to get me his heavy,” he said. “They can definitely tell when I go home I’ve been putting on weight.”

At the beginning of the year I read that he was very close to 290. For some reason they don't change weights on the depth chart very often.
