Why Soccer will always be considered a "girly-man" sport.

they do it to sell the foul

i've played soccer all my life but i'll never back up a player who does that...and I don't do it myself.

I wouldn't say that makes soccer a girly-man game though. It's not an easy sport. There's just a select few who constantly prefer to dive than rely on their own skill.

Of course I'll never understand games like basketball where it's perfectly accepted that with the last two minutes everyone is going to foul anyone with the ball.

They just need to keep the clock running durring freethrows.. :laughpound

I keep kidding my Son about Soccer or Baseball being girly-man sports just to give him a hard time..I'm really trying to quit (doing that).

Back when I played Soccer..it was in grade school durring Lunch..and we had ~25 fifth graders taking on the rest of the classes..(usually around 70)..I think they now call it "Herd Soccer" ..Some of our best players were Girls and we almost never lost...But then, a few of the sixth graders were trying to grab a smoke while the ball was at the other end.

A couple years ago, I was asked to help coach my Son's team and I remember asking when they came up with positions (after the head coach mentioned having the Forwards? go with me or something)...She just shook her head and scratched her crotch..(and spit some seeds at me). For the longest time, I thought she was Rosie O'Donnel.

Then, later on. I was corrected by a former college player about how safe I felt the sport was..I think I mentioned something like "At least my boy probably won't get hurt out here".

He said, are you kidding? then showed me the scar where they had to re-attach his Achilles Tendon because the guy that was guarding him kept stepping on his heel when the refs weren't looking.

I can't imagine trying to keep up with these kids now days, with only 5 team-mates on the field and nobody to hide behind as you're trying to catch your breath and get your pulse rate below a hummingbird's .

To understand why soccer will never be popular in this country all you have to do is read the forward of Sal Palintonio's book, "How Football Explains America."

I find it interesting that the world's two biggest soccer stars Pele first and then David Beckham created only a fleeting moment of interest when they came to play in this country. Pele retired and went home, Beckham basically caused a stir because of the huge contract he reportedly had and because he had a cute little wife. When the lights dimmed he schlepped back to Europe and, thank God, took his over rated wife with him.

The scoring and timing alone will keep soccer from being popular. A clock that ONLY the refs know how much time is in the game. Almost no scoring. And ties are accepted. The rest of the world can have their game where nothing happens.

On the flip side I was at an 18 and under girls soccer game about 30 years ago where three players broke their legs: two on one team and one on the other. I'm not a fan of the sport but that was one of the most aggressive sporting events I had ever attended. (The sister of one of my friends was playing in the game.)

it's because they decide to come to a country where a) soccer isn't that popular and B) the teams aren't nearly as good as they are in other countries. In a team sport good players can actually suffer when they are surrounded by mediocre players.

but you're right strigori, as much as it sucks...American's have short attention spans and if the score isn't 100-99 (even though that's just technically the same thing as 1-0) they aren't going to bother with it. Although for some reason people still watch NASCAR.

of course there is indoor soccer which is much more fast paced and higher scoring.
