I can honestly say that in my day to day life I haven't seen someone wear a mask in 2 weeks.  Again, this is rural Nebraska but close to some hot spots.  My son said he is seeing more people wearing them in Lincoln as opposed to a few weeks ago.  

I'm in a coffee shop in major city albeit a red state, and unexpectedly 1 in 3 are masked.  Church and box stores are the only places with nearly complete masking.  Our local Husker bar is quite typical, I rode by this week and none of the patio patrons were actually wearing one.

This is one of the concerns. There are other concerns as well. One of those concerns is "catching the virus"; another concern is what has been mentioned which is cost vs benefit when most colleges have advertised the concept of "small class sizes" and "getting to know a professor." Another is the residential living expense on campus. Why come to a campus that is online and just stay in your dorm doing online courses? Some schools are having to confront the bloated costs to run a university with little to no students. 

A confrontation is long over due.  There are far more efficient ways to teach classes than the current system.

Is it an election year in France? Germany? Italy? Ecuador? South Korea? Because they all advocated shutting down, too.

You are delusional if you think all this chaos is random. Not just covid going on. Last time I checked this was the greatest country in the world and many envies and wants to move here. I’m not saying we have done everything right- but I am tired of all the loonies who worship socialist, communist, or just s#!t countries just because they put on masks sooner. Do you not see political bias in the reporting? Charts and data can look real good or real bad when you show selective data. Just stop

And this method has been demonstrated to be more effective than in person classes especially for subjects such as anatomy or chemistry or physics labs or plant biology labs or other hands-on learning experiences typically seen in some courses? And do you have a lot of experience teaching by this method?

How many states are shut down currently? My state is wide open despite worse numbers than ever. We closed for 2 months. Most states are similar. Nebraska never closed down. So this narrative we have been bunkering down for 5 months is false. Sorry we can't just go full on back to normal like you would probably like. What happened to patience and perseverance? We have to actually do things to help our fellow American during this time of crisis.

You say people have lost businesses but is that truly because of government restrictions or because of the economic distress a pandemic brings? Restrictions or not pandemics cause economic problems as well. Just look at Sweden, a place that went the herd immunity route and hasn't seen any benefit to their economy for it. If people are getting sick and dying in large quantities that isnt good for business plain and simple. 

Not every state takes a level headed approach like Nebraska.

School is not for everyone, and many kids aren’t prepared for college coming out of high school. Education is vital, but I think we get more bogged down with liberal arts requirements and pushing 4-year degrees on kids who are not ready for that, which can turn out to be discouraging and can bury people in debt.

Here's the problem with this premise - we didn't shut down for two months. Some bars and restaurants went to take-out only, but you weren't required to stay in your home. You have been free to go out and meander around and do whatever you want this whole time. Many, many, many people never stopped going to work, never stopped going to the store or to Menard's, and they weren't wearing masks.

Every other country whose death & infection rates have plummeted to the point where they can legit open back up and have sports have done three things:

1) Wear masks

2) Socially isolate long enough to get spread under control

3) Washed their hands. A lot.

America has never done this. We don't need a "new tool shed," we need people with the fortitude to just do those simple things. 

Since early April in America medical experts, the CDC, epidemiologists have been pushing those three things. That we haven't done them is our own fault.

I am not an educator, but I work in higher education. I don’t recommend online lab classes, but if you choose a degree with a lab requirement, then I have that frank conversation of how difficult it is to self learn and Skype/Email an instructor with questions. If a student wants that career path, then I’ll have that conversation of expectations, but the student still has to make their own decision. If they want something bad enough, they’ll work for it and succeed. If they don’t, then are they a good fit for that career? 

We have a few programs that utilize this and it is beneficial (just don’t try using your GI Bill and say this is an in-class offering because it’s not considered as such unless you’re physically present to get the full housing stipend lol). We are beginning to roll out more offerings like this.
