How the hell was that a dumb pass?
It was 2nd and 1. If it's incomplete, w shave two more downs to get a yard and the clock stops. It's called a shot play. He had one on one coverage.

That's great situational awareness.

He was guaranteed 20 yards and out of bounds. That is better than a low percentage TD pass.
