I think the idea is that he's a movie spectator - hence the popcorn and the tie-in the the LA Film Festival...

I was wondering the same thing, why is that guy was watching, a peeping tom maybe?? Setting there in the dark watching his room mates / neighbors / whatevers date go to the bathroom, strange little man...
