I hate to keep beeting this drum but the whole defense played great with the exception of one certain corner.
Here is the bottom line. Grixby may not be the best corner around but if he is not the best on our team, then why is he always covering the other team’s best receiver. Is it his fault? Should he take himself out of the game? I may not be an expert, but aren’t player personnel decisions made by the coaching staff?
The next time I see Grixby all by himself on a 6’5” receiver, I’m gonna scream! Again!!! (ask my kids, I’ve been screaming at the T.V. all season). I will also be screaming just as loud the next time I see Stewart Bradley covering a wide-out and getting there just after the pass. Look, I don’t blame the coaches or players if the other team catches you in a mismatch once in a while, but gimme a break! How many times do we have to watch our middle linebacker chasing a wide receiver after he gets first down yardage? How many times are we going to see the D-backs give a ten yard cushion on 3rd and 5? How many times are we going to refuse to put in nickel coverage on third and long? Those horrible schemes are the Defensive coordinators fault. If he has the wrong personnel in all of the time, then he obviously doesn’t know how to evaluate talent or design an effective defense. I don’t care what he or any of the other coaches say, it is better to have an inexperienced d-back cover a receiver than to try to do it with a veteran linebacker. There is a reason Stewart Bradley and Corey McKeon don’t play corner. BECAUSE THEY ARE LINEBACKERS!!!!!
If Elmassian and Busch can’t get the young DB’s ready, then maybe we need someone who can. And if Cosgrove isn’t putting pressure on them to do their job, maybe we need better leadership on the defensive side of the ball. And Callahan better not stick it out and be too loyal to his buddy “Cos.” He may be willing to go down with his friend, but we fans are not. Callahan better realize that hiring his friend was a bad decision, and cut his loses now. If not, people are going to start calling for his head too.
