Cartoon sparks discussion, conflict

Mark Mangino, fans mocked in comic

Nebraska's school newspaper, The Daily Nebraskan, ran an editorial cartoon Monday about Saturday's football game. It can be construed as offensive, and classless.

After an Omaha television station ran a news story about an editorial cartoon that appeared in Monday’s Daily Nebraskan, the Nebraska school newspaper, the paper received an abundance of letters to the editor and comments on its Web site.

The cartoon angered fans of both Nebraska and Kansas.

Jenna Johnson, the editor of the Daily Nebraskan, said the paper was running eight to 10 letters to the editor in today’s newspaper. But before people jump to a quick judgment of the cartoon, Johnson said it’s important that they understand the context.

Johnson said that the cartoon was meant to be critical of both Kansas and Nebraska fans.

She said that a number of Kansas fans showed up to the game in “our coach can eat your coach” T-shirts. During the game when Eric Washington was injured in the third quarter, Nebraska fans started to do the wave around the stadium.

“I think people who misunderstand it are people who weren’t at the game or do not know the context of the cartoon,” Johnson said.

Some fans, like Morgan Henzlik, Atlanta junior, have interpreted the cartoon as making fun of KU coach Mark Mangino’s weight rather than as a criticism of the fan bases.

“It seems like a cheap shot – an easy thing to go after,” Henzlik said. “OK, our coach is fat, that’s not the first time we’ve heard that.”

Before publication, Johnson said the Nebraskan editors made sure that Washington was not going to be severely injured. Johnson said if Washington had been paralyzed, the cartoon would not have run. Once they found out Washington was going to be OK, the editors decided to run the cartoon.

“This is an editorial cartoon that our editorial cartoonist did just like an opinion column,” Johnson said. “This is his opinion, his view on the football game.”

Hey every football team has a few classless fans..............If you would have been paying attention about 99% of the crowd was pissed about it and didn't do it!!!! What's with the B.S. this morning from you???

The cartoon seems to be criticizing NU fans for celebrating the injury of a KU player and KU fans mocking their coach. I don't disagree with that. Thoughtless at best.

I don't know maybe I'm reading into things a little too much this morning, but I can see how it would make people upset.............I don't want people to think that we are like that at all..............I was worried as hell for that guy and relieved to hear that he was going to be okay..........

Thanks FTH. I think an apology from the student paper is owed at least! Otherwise I have no problem with Husker Fans, they pay the $65-70 ticket prices to fill our stadiums

I know you guys all aren't like that, I would expect NU fans to be discouraging others from doing the wave during injury timeouts out of respect for the game.

This is all much to do about nothing. Everyone around me showed the deepest respect for the kid who got injured! :clap

Personally I doubt any or very many had any malice intent when they did the wave. The wave for most doesn't really mean anything. It's just something to do when the game isn't in progress. It's like buying overpriced food at the stadium that you would never guy at any other time. It's just one of those things you do. As far as "our coach can eat your coach". It's funny, there was no malice intended it's just a way to have a little chuckle. The wave is fun. I do it every chance I get. The kids get a kick out of it and it's just a way to break the boredom when there's no action on the field. 99% of those doing the wave probably didn't know how serious the injury was or didn't even know there was an injury. Lighten up, enjoy the game and have a little fun. Next thing we'll hear is that releasing the baloons is disrespectful to the flying feathery creatures that in habit the skies.............although I do still get a kick out of baloon that got into the powerlines and started the outhouse on fire several years ago. Granted an outhouse was damaged but that is funny stuff!

I don't think the wave is appropriate when there is an injury though.................a timeout yes an injury no..... :dunno

It was one half of a section trying to get it going. No one else would play along. Let the sour grapes come to fruition.

I don't really think it's that big of a deal anyway. The wave sucks to begin with.

That's why the kid got a standing ovation when he was carted off the field.

The wave does suck.

Whatever, it's more fun to try and start bullsh#t controversies. Thanks media!

I didnt see the wave, for I watched it on tv. But dont judge the Husker nation by a few of the Husker fans.

The wave was a few people.. about 95% of the stadium was silent. As previously mentioned most people around me were upset about the few that doing it!

Personally I was at home watching TV hoping that that kid was ok. Apparently according to your thread name I am a disgrace because a FEW stupid fans were trying to get the wave going... I am so glad that Washington is going to be allright, but now that they are saying he will be playing later on this year, it's safe to say someone needs to teach him how to tackle, seriously I am concerned about that kid. Earlier in the game it looked like he put himself in the same position when BJax had the ball and Washington got himself blown up. He was lucky he didn't get hurt then... JMO No one wants to see anyone get hurt.
