Game by game stats tell an even bigger picture, we rushed for 285 yards against illinios, 200+ against at the time winless psu, and not to mention the -2 yards against purdue.

But somehow, someway this is Riley's fault.

285 yards per game would have been #3 in the country.  But that's evidence of how bad we were to you?

It was 146 against a PSU team that finished 4-5 and almost always recruits Top 10 talent.  They only averaged giving up 130 rush yards per game.

And we held Purdue to -2, not ran for -2.

Good effort trying to find every possible way to make things sound bad though.

I'll acknowledge NU ran switch zone or bash concepts far more frequently than say OSU, plays where you anticipate the read to lead to the QB running the ball, but w/o getting technical, I believe that reflected a lack of confidence in the O-line balanced w/a desire to still run the ball.  RB play needs to improve, but good teams run those plays looking to cash in.  Running those plays at the frequency NU did last year, says far more about the O-line than the RB's to me, & my ?'s around the running game this year are still far more dependent on the O-line than the RB's.

I understand where you are coming from regarding the QB run game.  It is a big part of what NU does.  I'm too lazy to look it up, but IIRC, a lot of Lukes yards were scrambles and not designed.  His whole ability seemed to be based on read, rip or run.  AM had a lot of scrambles as well. My point towards Wan'dale was more aimed at being used as  RB.  At times due to necessity, but again points to no RB ready (development/trust or health).  While we might be a "running team", our production (and success) is far from it.  

I agree with you that the running game (success or failure) all starts up front. No doubt about that.  An above average OL and our running game looks much better.  As does the passing game.  It just seems like we are like a car that's not running on all cylinders.  We have good pieces and parts.  Just need to put it all together.  The D is coming along and I think has the chance to be salty if we can get (develop) an edge rusher.

 
the qb run game is a crap shoot when it comes to needing your main man to stay healthy. long term, not effective unless you are 2-3 deep on running qbs.

That's another concern going into this year.  IIRC, AM has missed games every year.  Hoping he can stay healthy this year.  That'll help a lot.  And if he goes down, we are going into using another QB with no real game time experience.  TBH, I can't remember the last time a NU QB stayed healthy all year.  Maybe Ganz?

Healthy depth has got to be developed across the board for sure.  The B1G lives up to it's physical reputation for sure.

Maybe now that Riley's OL recruits are gone, we can teach the rest of the guys some run blocking techniques. :dumdum

I don't care who the opponent is, but holding a team to negative rushing yards is pretty impressive.  And it was a FBS B1G team.....Not to shabby Chin.....I'm excited to see the D this year.  IMO, guys came back for a reason.

I don't know about that, but I thought Farniok would be dominate inside, & I would be shocked if he didn't grade out better in pass pro.  He rarely got movement & the frequency with which he whiffed or fell off blocks immediately after contact was reminiscent of watching a fat freshman playing on Friday night.    

The jury is still out on Austin, but it appears he coaches Zone Blocking by having his guys run tracks.  I'm not saying that's wrong, I would just suggest he is coaching at the school where the guy who literally wrote the book on zone blocking coached, & that's not how he did it.

The O line is a big part of the run game success.  But, it also depends on the ability to throw down field and take some of the second and third level defense out of run support.
