I've dropped in on a Bengals board a few times since Taylor has been there, see what they think of him. Obviously, it's been a major turnaround year for them this year, and most posters who doubted him seem happy to eat some crow. But there's always those few trolls who just can't let his (awful) first couple years there go and enjoy this season. They'll say things like "he's still a .340 coach" and "it's all Burrow & the players, any coach would have a great record with this much talent on the team." (Which reminds me of the Bo era 'anyone should be able to get 9 wins at Nebraska'...)

I'm sure we'll see some of that around here if Frost gets things turned around...

So, if he puts three 9 win seasons together, he would be at 42-37 and barely over .500.  Your opinion would still be that of...."yeah...but he still sucks because of his overall record".  Do I have that correct?

 
It isn't just about Frost's record, though. It's about his failure to fix glaring problems three years running - like special teams.

If we start winning 9 games and the obvious underlying driver of those 9 win seasons are having fixed the systemic problems he has, then I'll give him all the credit. Well...I might give Alberts a fair share, as well.

Anyway, yeah - it'd take a real curmudgeon of a person as a Bengals fan to not see the glass as being at least half full on Taylor. That's crazy.

Say anything remotely negative, no matter if it's true and it becomes "fans will complain about everything!".

He's done a good job with the Bengals. Different situation than 15-29.

I get your point, but 16-31-1 is remarkably similar to 15-29. His 6-25-1 coming into this year was worse.

He does obviously have the upward trend that Frost doesn't, and it happened in year 3 where we're hoping for a year 5 switch from Frost. So definitely not apples to apples but it is interesting how similar their records are.

Not arguing that he shouldn't have fixed things sooner, but a couple things make this less black and white. 

1. Undefeated season at UCF got him thinking he knew the best way to do everything. 

2. COVID messing with practices, schedules, etc.

3. He tried bringing in new specialists and a new analyst, it just failed miserably.

I completely agree with points 1 & 3.

But on the other hand, Scotty doesn't really get any points for trying to fix things. He's actually getting worse as the seasons go by.

I still believe in the guy, though. 

 
I suppose the team needs to pass the very subjective fan “eye” test - meaning they better be more like Huskers that we all want to see.  Stats alone won’t cut it I’m guessing. Many are going to reasonably expect some solid Neb wins over teams we should be defeating.  Some losses to top tier teams that aren’t ugly, be tolerated.  Not sure a magic number of wins but for a losing season there needs to be an upset over a quality Big Ten team or OU for example.  Close but not many cigars = more of the same.    I am hoping Whipple can whip up some wins to give us a few smiles.

That's quite different than going 4-8 to 5-7 to 3-5 and then 3-9 while going 1-9 against Power 5 competition in year 4.  If Frost succeeds in year 5 it's more fluke like than showing linear progress like the Bengals have to date.  Frost would still need to do well in year 6+ to shake his failures to date.

One score games were a sore spot for Taylor as well, until this year. Not quite having 75% of your games be one score and losing all of them, but in 2019 the Bengals went 2-14, including 0-8 in one score games. 2020 they went 4-11-1, and really the only improvement was one score games - they went 2-5-1 in them. They are 4-4 in one score games this year.

By the advanced metrics I could find the 2020 team wasn't any better that 2019, they just had the luck or whatever it was to flip a couple of those which looked like improvement. And then this year they are a lot better by all measures. But Taylor might not have even gotten a 3rd year had they not flipped some of the one score games - and before anyone suggests Burrow was the difference in "clutch" time, they went 2-7-1 when he started, and were 1-4-1 in one score games. They went 2-4, (1-1 in one score games) with the backups. 

And again, I recognize giving Taylor a chance to get it correct in his 3rd year is not the same as what's going on with Frost.

The notion that many hold that the QB is solely responsible for clutch last drive wins or losses is just ridiculous.  Yes they have a part but often in those situations the defense can pin their ears back and bring pressure, or more easily disguise things by faking pressure.  Every guy on the offense has to perform in that scenario, and if the offense isn't very good overall I am not sure why since if you expect magic and then blame only the QB.

Not directed at you,  just expanding your point.  This is a team sport, yet QBs get labeled based in part on others failures.  It's lazy fandom for not actually trying to understand the whole game.

It's true that football is a team game....11 players doing their part.

However, on offense only two players touch the ball on virtually 100% of the snaps.

Hard to blame the fumble versus Michigan elsewhere as an example.

There are certain instances yes, but it's simply lazy to blame the QB as a blanket excuse.
