Your cell phone is watching you

International Man of Mystery
That’s No Phone. That’s My Tracker.
THE device in your purse or jeans that you think is a cellphone — guess again. It is a tracking device that happens to make calls. Let’s stop calling them phones. They are trackers.

Most doubts about the principal function of these devices were erased when it was recently disclosed that cellphone carriers responded 1.3 million times last year to law enforcement requests for call data. That’s not even a complete count, because T-Mobile, one of the largest carriers, did not initially reveal its total. It appears that millions of cellphone users have been swept up in government surveillance of their calls and where they made them from. Many police agencies don’t obtain search warrants when requesting location data from carriers.

Thanks to the explosion of GPS technology and smartphone apps, these devices are also taking note of what we buy, where and when we buy it, how much money we have in the bank, whom we text and e-mail, what Web sites we visit, how and where we travel, what time we go to sleep and wake up — and more. Much of that data is shared with companies that use it to offer us services they think we want.
I wonder how comfortable people are with this kind of thing. Do you care that your whereabouts are known to your cell service provider? Is it a privacy issue, or no big deal?

I believe they can help find lost phones if you have your gps on, but its just a general area. I personally would mind if i was a criminal. I think if they are trying to find a criminal it is fine, and i think its okay to not have a warrant in a dangerous situation like that. It could also help with runaways/kidnappings. Some things you just can't worry about and this is one of them. The government is setting up more and more measures to control the entire population. I hate that they do that, and are trying to limit our freedoms, but at the end of the day, we live in a free country, and it could be much worse elseware. We are all going to die one day and then does it really matter if they could track millions of people?

this is very concerning and it should not matter if you have something to hide or not. this is a breach of privacy with no due process or protections. it is disconcerting both in respect to the government and corporations.

I agree with the one that said there's nothing to hide. Same here. I pay my taxes. Pay my bills. I don't break the law. I guess if it's surveillance that will mostly help keep us safe so be it. With that said....

This is complete f'ing bs. This government as well as the advancement of technology is completely out of control. It's not Obama's fault. it's not GOP's fault. It's everyone's fault. Tho we knew this crap was coming at some point. Our free country is dun. has been for a long time, just didnt know it yet. Pretty soon you wont be able to take a crap without a permit and a seatbelt, cuz if you do, they'll be watching.

The law enforcement requests without a warrant has to be for a runaway, kidnapping victim, or suicidal subject. That's all I've ever been able to use them for in the past. Anything other than that and they make us get a warrant. The cell phone companies are a real pain to deal with and won't budge on their policies. Now as far as what the feds are doing...................I have no idea.

So big brother wants to 'track' everyone. Maybe someday they'll find a way to use this technology to 'track' jobs and affordable health care for Americans.

Privacy? That's as obsolete of an idea as bringing back 8-track tapes. And it's not just cell phones either. When you wake up in the morning and leave the house their are traffic cameras that could be used to follow you to work. If you stop at any business to buy a cup of coffee, soda, etc you're on surveillence there. You're photographed at every stop light. You're being watched while you're at work: every key you strike on your keyboard, every call, email, etc is tracked, read, and stored. When you surk the web, MSN, Yahoo, Google and the like track and store every site you visit, they keep every email you send, and the process repeates itself when you go home.

It's like Gene Hackman's character says in the movie Enemy of the State, the more technology you use the easier it is to keep tabs on you.
