Special teams coordinators are often times looked at hires for "Head Coach" jobs and named interim head coaches because they work with players and have to manage players from both offense and defense.  They also tend to have more big picture thoughts on managing a team, rather than being focused on offense or defense.

He's being mentioned because of his work with Sean McVay of the Rams.  NFL teams love to hire assistant coaches from successful teams/offenses.  Mike Holmgren had so many assistant coaches get hired as head coaches in the mid to late 90s, and of course Holmgren came from the Bill Walsh coaching tree.

Why not Urban Meyer for the Cleveland job?   Right up the road in Ohio.  No pressure.  Big bucks, popular, etc.   Great retirement job for him.   Expecatations are low or non-existant and away from the fish bowl.  If Ohio State flops the rest of this year, the grumbling will be heard and he may not be all that happy there.

Meyer probably doesn't want to take the pay cut.

Mixed emotions like many of the people who have posted. Zac is a great guy. Cleveland is a horrible job.

When would this move happen anyway? I mean, I start by assuming that Cleveland waits until the end of the year and then decides if it wants to keep the interim guy with a modified or same staff of coaches or if they want to hire a new coach and start over. Then again, this is Cleveland. They might hire a Coach In Waiting and have him stand directly behind the interim guy, reminding him between plays that he won't be the coach in two years, only to have the interim guy fire back with, "That's Ok, you won't be the coach in two years either."
