Great Perspective from Shatel

70 - 31 and 63 - 38 are pretty horrible numbers.

Still, I remember similar embarrassing losses from the Osborne years, when the Huskers simply did not look like they belonged on the same field.

But I had to go look them up to be sure. Yep.

1973 OU 27 NU 0 Not even a field goal?

1975 OU 35 NU 10 We were ranked #2 at the time and looked awful

1977 OU 38 NU 7 Ouch

1985 OU 27 NU 7 We were #2 and failed to show up in every phase of the game

1988 UCLA 41 NU 27 Mistake riddled Huskers fell behind 28 - 0 in the first quarter. Sound familiar?

1988 Miami 23 NU 3 Nebraska had 135 total yards including 80 rushing yards on 38 carries. Current Husker offense has never looked this pathetic.

1989 FSU 41 NU 17 That vaunted Husker power running game had 115 yards on 46 carries.

1990 OU 45 NU 10 Unlike previous years, the Sooners weren't even ranked when they spanked us

1990 Ga. Tech 45 NU 21 (fell behind 21 - 0 in the first quarter) This was the beatdown that really killed a lot of Husker fans. We just didn't feel we could compete against top ranked opponents. It's reportedly the game that convinced Tom Osborne to change his recruiting culture and start recruiting for defensive speed.

1991 Miami 22 - NU 0 Not even a field goal. Not even this close. Huskers had 171 total yards.

In summary, slightly less on the defensive embarrassment scale, rather worse in terms of offensive futility.

Mitigating factor: those were some pretty damn good Oklahoma & Florida-based teams.

Frustration with Osborne -- who seemed to get out-coached in every big game -- remained pretty high. For about 20 years.

Thanks for this trip down memory lane!

Good post and appreciate the number crunching. +1

Both hurt yes. However in one you are not competitive and are embarrassed. THAT is the difference. 10/10 Times I would rather lose a close game than get destroyed.
You would be just as upset if we lead Wisconsin for 59 1/2 minutes only to piss it down our leg. You would be wanting coaching chances just as bad cuz Bo couldnt "close the deal" Everyone already knows you're one of them people, so dont try to spin reasons.
*start slow clap*

The thing I remember about those Miami bowl games is that we were totally outmanned, and the offense couldn't move the ball much, but the defense didn't let the game get away like it easily could've.

Those games also are the reason we can't just play smashmouth football and run the ball all the time. Miami's defense shut us down and we simply didn't not have an offense that could pass. I cringe everytime I hear someone complain that we just have to run the ball no matter what. With Frazier, Frost, and Crouch, we at least had a passing game that teams had to respect.
