Tommy Armstrong

HAHAHAHAHA WHAT?.....

Our O-Line was excellent this year, even with half of the 2-deep rotation injured.

Unbelievable.....
"Excellent" is a severe, severe stretch. The injuries have to be taken into account, no question. But, as an overall unit, they were slightly above average at best this season. I'm not sure what line you were watching if you thought they were excellent, because it certainly wasn't Nebraska's.

Excellence would be what Stanford and Alabama had throughout the season. In comparison to those programs, Nebraska has a long ways to go.
Don't want to derail the thread, but how is Stanford's oline excellent if ours isn't? Only common opponent was MSU and we had more total yards and more rushing yards while also having more turnovers. If you ask me, this line may not have been excellent, but it was definitely better than just "above average".

I'm also curious why everyone is so ready to annoint Stanton as the next thing. He might be great, he might be a bust. He's never taken a snap and so many are ready to name him the starter.

Tommy obviously has several things to work on and get better, but he's already light years ahead of where Taylor was as a freshman skillset wise. There are so many positives for him to build on.

I hope it's not handed to Armstrong. Stanton should get a fair shot. Competition is good.
I think that he'll get a fair shot. Martinez was always treated differently. Beck/Pelini have already shown that they think that TA is level headed enough to be pulled out of games when he plays poorly.

Armstrong seems like a good kid, but lets not convince ourselves he's the next great Husker QB. Outside of one pass play, yesterday he was 5-13 for 64 yards with a TD and an INT. Not exactly highlight reel stuff. I realize he is young and can improve, but I just haven't seen much from him yet that would make me think he's the guy. He plays well enough at times, but also has terrible accuracy in the short passing game.

Add in at least 3 dropped passes that hit the receivers right in the hands and that stat turns into 8-13 for quite a few more yards.

He has areas where he needs to improve. He and the coaches know that. He will work on those in the off season. However, pointing out simple stats doesn't tell the whole story.

I don't know that he will be great but (in this game at least) I was impressed with his pocket awareness and I thought that he made generally sound decisions with the football. Also, he's the best option QB that we've seen in some time.

His stats are hurt by some pretty bad drops. Turner's being the most obvious. TA can't really throw that pass much better. Of course, his stats were helped my some good catches on iffy passes as well.

I've never played QB or coached the position but I think that it's probably easier to improve accuracy on short passes than trying to fix the type of brain farts that we saw from our last QB.

That pass to Turner was perfect, yes. But lets not forget the reason we were at the 1 cm line on that 99 yard pass. A bonehead fumble that he tried to pick up and run with. And that INT he threw was pretty bad. Perhaps solid coaching can improve his accuracy. Personally, I'd like to see a full time QB coach on the staff, so that he doesn't have to go hire his own QB coach in his spare time, but that's just me.

It is not just you.

Yep. But he only did that once during this game . . . so that's a significant improvement over a certain senior QB. If he is still doing that in 3 years it will be a lot more concerning.

It was.

You and me both. And every other HBer probably.

Yeah...this is not even remotely close to accurate.
What exactly did Taylor do as a freshman other than run dead sprints on the read option (admittedly very well)?

Tommy's mechanics are substanially better, he obviously needs work on his accuracy, but that's easier to fix than poor mechanics. Right now his pocket awarness is as good as Taylor's in his final year. His footwork is better, his armstrength is at least as good and probably better.

I'm not trying to demean Martinez at all, but lets face reality, he was an athlete playing QB. Tommy has actuall QB attributes and if you can't see the difference between them at this stage of their career then I don't know what you're looking at.

Can you explain to me how you're defining "skillset wise" before I respond please?

That fumble which led to the 99-yard TD wasn't Tommy's fault. The snap was a bullet at his knees and he's lucky to have gotten a hand on it at all. That could easily have gone past Tommy or between his knees and been a safety. It wasn't pretty by any means but it was not his fault at all.
