Why not this year?

You forgot Martinez.

In a list of reasons for failure, there always has to be Martinez included. Regardless if there is a Martinez on the team or not. It's just a natural reaction.
now it will be because we do not have t-mart on the team.

1. Will make no difference one way or another.

2. I think the defense is going to be good. All-world? Nah. We were decent at the end of the season, and we were so bad for so long it might have seemed like we were all-world, we weren't.

3. Sure.

4. Sure.

5. Ehh, let's start playing sound football before we worry about a conference title, let alone a national title.

why not this year?

injuries

conference change

schedule (we have to play on the west coast in the middle of the night!)

youth and inexperience

callahan

eichorst remaining quite

refs

young coordinators

first time head coach who needs more time

recruiting turning around next year

ineffable fumbles and penalties

i don't know, we have a whole season to decide.
No offense, 'brotha, but it's lists like these that explain why we are stuck in mediocrity and why so many Husker fans accept mediocrity. Love your comment "recruiting turning around next year." Ridiculous. Next year will never get here. Also, we can't waste a unique players like Randy Gregory waiting for next year. Also, are we to believe that the Huskers will fall short because "Eichorst is remaining silent." Unbelievable what Husker fans have come to accept as obstacles.

that was pretty much my whole point.

2009 defense. 2014 offense. We are talking about a Conference Championship.
even 2009 defense and 2010 offense. that would have been pretty stout. we were so close. just need to put it all together.
It still boggles my mind how we always seemed to have one and not the other.

Great defense. Crap offense. Great offense. Crap defense. Mediocre defense, mediocre offense. Crap special teams.

I'd still say, after this season, we are going to say forget that 2010 offense, I'll take the 2014 model. A few games into this season when Armstrong finds that comfort level and we start hitting on all cylinders, we will be an offense that can do it all. Not limited like we were with Taylor.

I don't see this as drinking Kool-aid. Kool-aid would be thinking that Bill Callahan could lead us to a title. Kool-aid would be thinking that Taylor Martinez could lead us to the promised land. Kool-aid would be thinking that we were going to beat USC in 2007. This year is hardly a Kool-aid situation. Kool-aid denotes something that is beyond the realm of possibility. We aren't even remotely in that boat. When we say "let's drink Kool-aid," what we're really saying is that we are no longer a first-tier team.
Nothing wrong with drinking Kool-aid and being proud of it. Me, Jerry Garcia, the Merry Pranksters and Ken Kesey all agree!
