ESPN State Of The Program: Nebraska

In terms of preparation, I would suggest Nebraska's offense will be easier to prepare for by Oregon simply because they will have a year's worth of film plus to study, particularly if Tommy is the QB. One would expect to see a blend of everything we ran last year with a little more run tendency, particularly the power run plays, assuming after two games we show we have a solid FB to replace Jano. But, early in the season, it won't be easy for teams to predict Riley because, as last year, the offensive mix varied quite a little game by game. We over passed and then over ran. Back and forth.

Oregon may be just like they have been, but maybe not.

I like our chances to be improved, particularly against the pass. Our D line, may take some time to gel and replace VV and Collins but it appears we have good players. If we find some good rush ends, we should be at least 8 pts a game BETTER defensively. Assuming, the O linemen we have coming in do OK, I foresee a solid 5 pts a game improvement in scoring average and as much as 65 yards a game in total offense. Those numbersm, seem reasonable to me, and suggest a dramatic improvement in the number of wins vs. losses this fall. All of this assumes we are more careful with the football. I think we reduce total turnovers by about 8 for the season and get about 56 more takeaways. We will also see a solid gain in punt and kick off return yards, as we will have better returners fielding more balls. Fewer fair catches will help on the punt returns. We also MUST catch the punts and cut way down on the number of punts we fail to catch, letting them roll deep in our own territory.

Maybe there is some wishful thinking in all of this but I am a die hard Husker for life too. But, I still feel there are good reasons to see another season of the team getting all on the same page and picking up the details etc will make efficiency much more possible. Effective passing and running will make big differences;.

Oops I meant about 5 more takeaways. Typo there. LOL

I imagine the Oregon game to be very competitive at least into the early part of 4th quarter. The key to stopping Oregon is not letting them get on a "run". They may not be the Mariota team, but they can burn you on a single given play all game long. The issue with beating Oregon usually is that you have to outscore them. With a new defensive philosophy coming in...who know's about how their defense will look. They have athletes everywhere. If Nebraska/TA can keep from throwing too many INT's they will have a shot.

Oregon does very well on taking the ball away and then turning those possessions into immediate points via explosive plays. Unfortunately I don't see NU getting the win at the end. I see the inexperience/rebuild of NU getting in the way of this first game against Oregon. 2017 will be interesting but it's harder to win in Eugene than it is in Lincoln in the recent past. So who knows. It will be an interesting series. However just don't see NU on the winning end yet. Few years away still.

NU's Secondary and LB's have to be playmakers ALL game to have a shot in either game. The stress Oregon puts on those 2 groups is ridiculous.
I think you are thinking more with your heart than your head here. I remember you thought Oregon with not miss a beat last year without Mariota. Their season last year came very close to becoming a disaster in the middle of it. With a hurt or absent Vernan Davis they sputtered badly. I was impressed to see them right the ship though. I see this game as coming down to TA. If good Tommy shows up they win.
A healthy Vernon ADAMS, and I would have been awfully close to correct. I don't see them somehow winning that Utah game last year but every OTHER game was right there.
Yeah but Adams isn't there this year and you are counting another grad transfer to play that well?
No, I'm not. Here's the thing. Oregon doesn't NEED a Marcus Mariota. They need someone that can perform close to what Darron Thomas and Jeremiah Masoli did. The defense struggles mostly due to when the offense doesn't move the chains. That's the downside to up tempo. You go 3 and out, and the defense has no rest. It's why the 1 game vs Stanford got out of hand until the 4th quarter in 2013.
I'm not saying Oregon will come in and light up the scoreboard to the tune of 50 points but, they will get their 30 at least.

Here's the thing. Oregon returned nearly everyone on both sides of the ball. The defense played well enough to beat Stanford and McCaffery. No reason to think they won't be ready.

Certainly not a dumpster fire as you make them sound. This isn't Colorado
COUGH NW BEAT STANFORD AND MCCAFFREY COUGH.

The same team that got embarassed by Utah and squandered away a huge bowl lead to TCU is coming to Lincoln with a new QB, no SF and Hoke on the defnse.

I am liking Nebraska's chances more and more.
Yea, coming to play a team that got smashed by PURDUEEEEEE. Gave up games on the last play and finished 6-7. With a QB that throws more INT's than anyone in the country. No consistent credible running threat. No consistent competent playcalling. Entire DLine gone. A secondary that is SUPER suspect. OLine that is questionable.
I like Oregon's chances more and more
Why in the hell are you even here?

QB situation: Advantage Nebraska

Oregon will have a new guy right? We have a 5th year Sr.

Defense: Advantage Nebraska

Oregon likes to run, we can stop that. If we improve at CB we could shut them down early through the air and make them run, which I am thinking we will be able to handle.

Offense: Advantage Oregon (MAYBE)

This is only if they are clicking. If we commit to an offense and what is working it will be advantage Nebraska.

SP teams: Draw

Honestly don't know who to give this to

Atmosphere: Advantage Nebraska

I mean, it's in Lincoln. Good luck finding tickets. People are jazzed for this. Gonna be a great home crowd.

Staff: Advantage Nebraska

They lost Frost as OC and will have a new guy at QB. Doesn't exactly instill fear into me.
That was last yr. I think losing a few guys there just , just might make a difference, we shall see

I see this being a very emotional game at the Power T house come game day. I mean who do ya root for?? its way to early to make a prediction on this. Oregon isn't the same as a few years ago, could be worse could be better. and I doubt HCMR has blown anyone away with his coaching abilities at Nebraska Or back in Oregon. I mean Purdue did beat Nebraska and the guy is a .500 coach. hopefully it doesn't take half a season this year to figure out what kind of a team he has.

I don't think we see a huge drop off. Lot of guys ready to show what they learned a year ago.

Of any of you think that offense at Oregon is changing much with a new offensive coordinator, I have ocean front property in Arizona for pennies on the dollar I will sell you.

Oregon bothers me for another reason.........

I think the Huskers are going to come into the game undefeated and expected to lose. I happen to think that they will beat an Oregon team that has no proven QB and a new OC in an offense that is very dependent on rhythm and big plays.

That win over Oregon will lull us into the "We're back" trap and we will be set up for 1 or 2 conference disappointments. Even though this would still be progress Huskerboard meltdown would be enough for me to take a break for a week or two.

this game reminds me of the USC game a few years ago.........we were all hyped up to show our stuff and got our a$$ handed to us.......not saying it will be a repeat, but Oregon is unlikely to fall apart without Frost....and Collins, our anchor, is gone.

Except this Nebraska team is more talented and this Oregon team isn't even close to as talented.

Riley knows Oregon better than anyone. I'm not optimistic but the guy has proven he can beat them with waay less talent than what he current has at his disposal.
Just so you know. Riley was 0-fer in his last 7 games vs Oregon. So I'm not sure where you are coming up with that. Especially with the upswing of Oregon's program as a whole.

I love both teams. This is a game I was hoping NEVER ever was to be played/scheduled. I remember when I got the news about Tennessee backing out and Oregon taking their place...gosh, what an emotional moment. I remember thinking how crappy it was going to be. Now, were almost to that point.

I know it sounds like I am hardcore Oregon, which is true, but I always feel like I have to defend them here. Which makes it LOOK like I'm clear cut Oregon. However, it's hard to be one way or the other.

Maybe Jesus will return before this game so I don't even have to worry about it.

Just stop. You're arguing against people who have, maybe, watched one Ducks' game in the past 2-3 seasons. You feel the need to defend them here because people here have no idea what they're talking about in regards to Oregon. Just sit back and chill.

Why do people do this? If you are talking the bowl game, we lost by 3 points with s chance to win it in the end.

We did not get our a$$ handed to us.
