Depth Chart for Arkansas State

So mav, you're expecting freshman and redshirt freshman to be taking over the depth chart?  And because they are not that means Riley isn't any better of a recruiter than pelini?

Pretty much yes.  If they're supposed to be a significantly better player, why couldn't they beat out an older guy?  Cethan Carter, Maliek Collins, Josh Banderas, Nathan Gerry, DPE, Chris Jones, Josh Kalu, Stanley Morgan, Dedrick Young and Aaron Williams would all have fit that description recently.  Lindsey, Avery Roberts and Deontre Thomas are true freshmen in the two-deep.  Add Wilson, POB, Spielman, Bootle and Dismuke as RSFrosh.  Why are you acting like it's such a ridiculous notion?

It's not exact.  If things are close the upper-classman is probably going to win out.  But if the younger guy can't beat out the older guy and has to wait around for him to graduate to get a spot, he must not have been much better, was he?

I think it's one more way to compare.  You can look at recruit rankings.  And now we have a bit of a look at what they are actually doing on the field.

I agree with those commenting about the prospects for next year based on the numbers of returning guys after this season.  However, I feel we have significantly more true and meaningful depth all over the team with the receiver spots looking a little deficient.  Some of that is recruiting ploy no doubt as they are still trying to land a couple 'big fish' and want to atleast appear to be short handed in that position.  I feel there is really no reason to not be optimistic about THIS fall as the team returns so many guys with some experience, albeit not necessarily as starters or all americans.  This depth chart looks, to me, to be the deepest in the past 4 or 5 years.  I have been and after looking over this depth chart and am even more excited about our chances to put a pretty good team on the field.

Obviously, we can afford injuries in several key positions but IF we can avoid major losses in the first half of the year, and we play most of these guys (really substitute frequently and get meaningful snaps to the 2 and 3s, by late October, we will be a very experienced team.  We will be a pretty good team by year end.

All of the above will be for naught, however, if we don't field some very good special teams.  That is the most overlooked and under considered aspect of the past two years.

Just lacks athleticism/range. Big reason they moved Kalu back there was to improve in that area.
is he any worse of an athlete than aaron williams? the whole defense look like it was slow when they played a elite team in ohio state. i would think it would have more to do with x's and o's but im just guessing

Try it the other way:  Who would you say are the best players Nebraska has had recently that weren't in the two-deep by their second year here?  OL may be an exception but even then I think most would have been backups by year #2.  Several started by then.

The closest one I can think of off the top of my head is Westerkamp redshirting but he was still in the two-deep as a RSFrosh.

If you're not in the two-deep by then, I'm not sure that you're really going to be an impact player.  Not that you can't have a role or even be a starter but probably not a game-changer.

What happened to kieron Williams? What is it about him the coaches just dont like?

I've seen bits and pieces from media guys ranging from lack of great speed/range to "guessing" too much to inconsistency.  So probably a combination of all of those.

But even those guys are pretty surprised at him being #3.

im going with kalu and dismuke are just beast nfl first rounders

Because signing is what matters way, way more? You can argue either way, which is why I didn't count the transition class either way.

Transition classes are always difficult, I think we need to give Riley a ton of credit for keeping most of those guys in the fold. It can be tough to do. Bo's transition class was a disaster for example.

I usually give credit to the coach that got them to sign on the dotted line, either way they're Huskers.

It is what matter the most but that's an overly-simplistic way to look at it.  There is a significant difference between "Go find guys and convince them to come here" and "Here's some guys who are set on coming here.  Don't screw it up."

By that logic Tim Beck is an amazing recruiter because he's "recruited" a Top 120 QB in the country each of the last three years.  Even though he's only had to do any actual work on one of them.
If we were talking the 2015 class, the transition class, then I would agree to give most of the credit to Bo and Co, but the 2016 class was recruited for a full 14 months by Riley and Co and got their signature. That 2016 class goes fully to Riley IMO.

Yeah - sorry mav but I don't think Barnett even had an offer from Bo. But by ur logic Rileys only class would be this incoming class. You gotta give Riley credit for the 16 class and Barnett at a minimum.

Dang, was really hoping Diaco would not put his defensive depth chart out there like Harbaugh.

Also to note, what has kieron Williams done to fall so far down the depth chart? Is the new defense maybe too complex for him, because the old defense was supposedly really easy to learn. He made plays when it mattered down the stretch and also made some mistakes during run plays. I am wondering does he not practice well and just show up for games or is it something else, I just don't understand how he can fall so far.

If he is not the best player I don't want him on the field but there has to be something that just isn't adding up.

Hey what's the diff between CAT and DOG? If our two top DOG 'backers are both really good, can't one of them shift over to CAT?

There are responsibility differences between the OLB's in Diaco's defense.

Here is a breakdown of Diaco's D and what each position does.

Basicslly the Cat OLB is the most similar to a 4-3 DE and will have more pass rushing capabilities, while the Dog OLB has more pass coverage responsibilities.
