Didnt Wake lose alot of players?

Fans of other Big 12 schools are marking this game down as a loss for us. What do some of you think?

My understanding is that last year their defense carried them. The offense was just good enough to put up two or three touchdowns and commit very few errors.

But they lost all the stars from their defense, including their top returning LB to academics. I don't think this game will be as competitive as it's being billed. Of course I haven't bothered to do any fact checking!

They return Riley Skinner, a pretty good QB, but they lose Jon Abbate, the heart and soul of their D. I anticipate they will slide a bit this season, but they will still be pretty decent. It should be a close one.

Wake had a knack for the lucky bounce last year too. Everything bounced their way last year. As long as we dont go in looking ahead to USC the next week we win.

I heard that they lost a key linebacker, it could as well be the one already listed above.

Here is your answer.

The News & Observer Tuesday, July 17, 2007 The Associated Press

"Eric Berry, expected to vie for the starting middle linebacker job at Wake Forest, was ruled academically ineligible Monday and will miss the season.

Berry, a 6-foot-1, 288-pound redshirt junior, will remain enrolled at school in the fall but will not take part in any football activities. He could return for the 2008 season.

Berry played in all 14 games last year, including one start. He made 26 tackles- including four for a loss- and had three sacks.

Berry was a candidate to replace last season's leading tackler, Jon Abbante, who turned pro."

great, let the "well they lost alot of players" excuse for NU winning the game out their
That excuse won't fly . Wake pretty much returns the nucleus of their team last year. They have 14 starters returning, many at the skill positions. In addition, two of their top players missed all or most of last season. Matt Robinson returns after leading the team in sacks in 04 and 05. He had two sacks in the spring game. Micah Andrews lead the team in rushing before being injured. These are top players who didn't play last year. In addition, Coach Grobe has got a successful redshirt program where fifth year seniors typically come out of the woodwork to have great seasons. No, this is a talented and experienced Wake team. Their center, Steve Justice, is considered by some to be one of the best in the nation. However, Keller should rip the Deacs secondary where they lost two starters. Unless Nebraska is looking past Wake to USC this should be a good test for them, but the Huskers should pass with flying colors. It could be a high scoring game.

Their conference did have a down year and they had an exceptional year. I think it will be a good game and It should be a test but they had one great year for their standards. We will have to wait to see if they can build on that or will they go into games just expecting to win. Let them deal with a team that lines up and smacks them and then lets see how theyt do, of course the same thing could be said of this years Huskers.

I like this game early in the year. It should be fun to watch.
