Great read for Husker Fans

Weis and Stoops inherited a lot of talent. Most said when both were hired that the talent was there to win. Stoops did with Blakes talent, he has not really done much since then as far as NC's. Weis in my mind has been a total flop. I expected him to be much better than he has been.

BC had a talent level that would not have done well who ever coached them. Tell me which QB on the team was going to lead Nebraska in a option offense. We did not have a QB to run the option. Daily was brought here to change to a more balance offense. He could not run nor could he pass at the college level. There was no one behind him. You can not just look at the wins and losses and decide what is going to happen the next year, do you remember the year before. If it were not for cupcakes we would have been a 500 team that year.

The wheels were off period, someday you guys are going to have to realize just how far down we were, and I know we won 9 games and lost 3. Yes we lost to any team that had a pulse and by a landslide margin.

And yes TO did win a lot of games when he started and through his career, but he played in a total joke of a conference most years, could never beat Oklahoma and then lost to any bowl contender they faced.

BC plays in a much tougher time. I seriously doubt TO could come in today and do a much better job than BC is doing. I really do not think there are many out there that could. I am not saying BC is the best college coach by any means, but I just do not know who you would get to do a better job.

He gets 6 years in my mind, he has had 3 and every year has been an improvement. I think this will be the year we all have a change of heart about him. I hope at the end of the six years I am man enough to admit I was wrong if I am. I hope you are the same. I understand your concern, but it just to early. I do not want to throw the bady out with the bath water just yet

Those are all the 5th year seniors that are slated to start that are Solich recruits. Three of them have STRONG Nebraska ties that are legacies at the University, so I wouldn't read too much into what Vomitneck tries to spew.

I don't think that proves anything. You can't tell me that Solich would have landed Keller, Lucky, Purify, Suh, Turner, Asante, crap I could go on and on and on. A Callahan recruit was Big 12 player of the year last year. I have read all of Barfy's team previews and the only team that he tried to harp on every negative point was Nebraska. Seriously, it's beyond ridiculous. Franchione has proven jack sh#t at A&M, yet he rated them higher than NU, eventhough he has a worse record than Callahan(25-23), they haven't beaten Nebraska since 98, lost to NU on their home field last year, lost 3 home games for that matter, completely biffed a bowl game against an average Cal team. He practically jerked Fran off under the table about how everything is going in the right direction there and they are poised for a break out year. Give me a flippin break. You can buy into his bullsh#t, but I'll pass.

Just for the sake of the game here, I'll ask this question of OmahaEeyore honestly.

What, exactly, is your thoughts on where the program would be right now if Solich had stayed on board? Where was the quarterback? Where were the running backs? Where were the facilities? Where was any pulse in the program that you can honestly say would have sparked life into us again? Just looking at the 9-3 season he put up (after a memorable 7-7 finish in 02) is enough reason for me to see the logic in the transition. We were going nowhere, getting destroyed by the likes of Mizzery KSUcks and Texas, and there was no future in sight.

Then along came Bill Callahan.

Updated facilities, 5 star recruits, an offense when once fixed in position will attract pro hopefuls like you to negativity, record crowds and trivial non-season events, pro coaches clinics, etc. etc. etc.

The only thing we're lacking is the big wins. Notice carefully how close we were last year. Notice carefully what kind of talent we've got coming in this year and next. If you can honestly say that Solich had a prayer in hell of accomplishing what Callahan is doing right before our eyes, then pal, I admire your faith.

But let's be real. Let's not be like a bloody Democrat on the war in Iraq. What's done is done. Callahan is the future, Solich is the past. You cannot give me one defensible reason why Callahan will not get the job done in the coming years. Callahan hasn't. Callahan has yet to live up to the legacy that Frank left.

Callahan is the future, Solich is the past.

The idea that a coach would not try to win a game has got to be the most ludicrous thing I have ever read. It goes against any reason anyone would ever become a coach to begin with.

And the idea that our current coaching staff, with the experience they have and the sheer volume of years they have been at least involved in football or really anyting competitive, would purposefully lose a game in not only unthinkable, it's down right dumb.

To believe Eeyore's assumption on this point is so illogical it makes my nose bleed. But you sir have made perhaps the best point here. Eeyore doesn't realize how close Bill's gameplan was to genius. He doesn't understand that Callahan was actually using very Osborne/Sollich-esque tactics. He was bringing this game into the fourth quarter. Part of the reason I am so hopeful about this and coming seasons is that I believe Callahan operates on a whole different level in this sport. He merely has lacked some fundamental execution in places and at certain inoppurtune moments.

Callahan knew what would win that game. It was ball control. He knew our D couldn't match up with their offense, so he staggered the blow by bringing in a scheme in where we would tire their D and keep the ball out of Jarret and Smith's hands. It was a stroke of brilliance. Unfortunately our O-line and backs couldn't get the job done. We were just outgunned, plain and simple.

This is why I see no need for this incessant, bitchy pessimism. Once we've got the talent to showcase Callahan's strategies––and that could begin Sept. 1 for all I know––I think people will take a different perspective on him.

And USC must be razed to the ground.

you absolutely hit the nail right on the head there. that is what made osborne such a great in game coach(he was a great coach period) he new when to pull out the trick plays and knew whne to take his shots. that is all that game plan last year needed. he just needed to take his shots a little earlier. and by shots I mean just a a couple of plays thats it. a trick play and maybe a deep ball. he did the same thing in the auburn game. I kept expecting a trick play of some type but it never came. the good news is I really think that Cally took bug steps last year, and I think he will again this year

People who want to give a football coach 6 years to have an effective yardstick of how they will do when the flipping president only gets four and most jobs in the private sector get 6 monthshave their priorities wayyyyy out of whack. My opinions have been well documented, lets see how this year goes

i actually see some of poopbear's points. he makes a little sense in his arguments, and has stayed pretty consistent with most of his talking points. it doesn't change my mind about the change and the progress we needed and have made.

i just think a little reality HAS to play a role in dealing with our current situation. plain and simple: something happened that night in Boulder when CU trounced us. a cosmic shift in the football world occured. "mike tyson was beat by buster douglas." we just have not been the same since. everyone kicked the top dog while it was down.

but now the dog has a new owner. and to teach an old dog new tricks, it takes time, patience, repition, cadence, and language. we are learning to piss in the neighbors yard instead of our own (see ya Beck & Co.). we have quit chasing our tail and now are ready to establish some turf. we were ALL loyal to our former owners, that's what makes this state special. we are being fed with top recruits, a new dog house, fresh grass, and let off the rope. we will still sniff the wrong butt sometimes, but mostly are hunting the right prey.

poopbear--you have every right to feel how you do and be pessimistic about the future (and the past) but, i think people here just want to be positive and have a bright outlook. especially since we're undefeated right now. we realize you have some valid points and just want to be level-headed about your assesment (some things i actually agree with you) but damn kid, nearly every post you write is negative. how about a few things you do like about the program every once in a while?

I love rehashing the Solich or Callahan arguement. About the "Band-aids" that Solich brought in aren't there 2 of his Top 3 that are out of work right now? If I'm not mistaken one is the guy that got handed the keys to the offense. Also who would the starting QB be? The WR at North Carolina or the kid that couldn't make it at Troy?

Here is a Barf-neck stat for everyone NU hasn't beaten a Top 20 team on the road since TO left. This has nothing to do with anything but I thought since it was Barf-neck I would bring it out there.
