What did we learn UNI edition

It really goes to show how close to the truth the people saying that we just needed a competent QB to get our offense rolling were.  Like you said, QB isn't the only thing that's changed, but it's definitely the biggest change.

 
I am excited, because I want my kids to experience what it used to be like. Nothing else like it. Rhule is FINALLY the right guy. He is a cool mix of Osborne and Devaney. 

But the biggest reason for my confidence is Raiola. He is just different from anybody else. He is so polished. Even the INT tonight is a 50/50 ball and we had the better athlete. Let them make a play. His evasion and feel in the  pocket and how he reads the defense is uncanny. Most seniors can’t do that. He is 19!!!!

Incredible. He drops balls over linebackers like NFL playoff QBs

Case in point:  If the DE stays home and manages to get a TFL on this play, people would be all over Satt for being "too cute".  Instead it's a TD and everyone thinks it's great.  

I like the misdirection.  Didn't work on in this case but I think it will and it helps the "base" plays work better because it helps keep the defenses honest.

 
Another great game for the defense. It wasn't perfect at times but we made stops when it mattered.

I like what we are trying to do on offense. We have alot of pieces we want to get involved. Feels like we are yet to hit on all cylinders.

I thought it was a great game for Raiola. He started near perfect, but did have some teachable moments. It was his most up and down game so far but that's pretty promising if this performance was up and down for him

You created two different hypothetical opposite ends of the spectrum there. It wasn't a touchdown and it wasn't a tackle for loss. It was a milk toast 1/2 yard gain. I see what you're saying but also, let's analyze what actually happened. I know I'm also bordering on 20/20 hindsight-ism.

I'm just saying it's easy to say the plays that work are great calls and the plays that don't work are bad calls.  That's not really how it works.

Kind of like Rhule said about the QB runs.  He doesn't even care all that much if they work or not.  That's now one more thing the future opponents have to prepare for.  And, thus, less time that they can spend preparing for other things that we do.

I completely agree with everything you said here.

We beat the the Vegas spread without a TD on the drive I'm complaining about. So, GBR, for sure.

 
The question I’m upserving:

have we been tested yet?  Any of our opponents been “good” to “pretty good?”

For sure our stats have been pretty good/great.  Amazing completion %, held opponents to minimal yards and scores. Wining the turnover battle (FINALLY), very physical football team (broken forearms and punks leaving early), winning soundly  when we should, amazing crowds, not much on the injury front….

But has Nebraska been challenged yet? Especially in the late 3rd thru 4th qtr? 
That’s my only worry is that the last 6 yrs we’ve been so damn close in ~6 point games and lost a staggering amount of those.  Now we are getting the 2s some experience and kind of shuffling off after the game. So it makes me wonder if we are “that good” or if we haven’t been tested yet to play a full 60.  
 

just some food for thought as we move into conference play against better teams. Can we play full 60  yet?  Were we better the last 2-3 years losing all those close games than our record shows to kind of skate thru our first 3 games this season?  Do we have what it takes to go toe to toe w a conference opponent for 4 quarters?  
 

so far so good, but honestly, we haven’t put 4 full quarters of all our starters fighting for their lives and gritting one out. We gritted out for so long and lost so many close close games. I just need to see a full 60 before I believe it. But love what’s happening so far. 

 
I found that we're probably never going to get a well reffed game ever. The Int was correct, but the refs are so adverse to calling holding when it happens to the Nebraska D it's not funny anymore (narrowed it down to the dline, but the final UNI play of the game had a terrible hold on the defender who actually made the play with no call). Also, what the f was up with the 4th down conversion by UNI, they held their punt team until like 10 seconds left on the play clock, then subbed their O back in and was able to get the play off. Don't think the refs allowed us a chance to make a counter sub like they should do. Also the Personal Foul for the out of bounds tackle kinda felt ticky tacky, especially when they didn't call UNI for a similar hit on the Barney play that was called for OPI that was overturned.

For the actual NU performance, the leaky yards were a disappointment by the defense. UNI's offense has big backs, but it felt too often where the D was trying to go for a big hit and not wrapping up.

Dylan has a great arm, but he also needs to put deep balls out further ahead of our WRs so that they can run underneath them better. His throw to Lloyd was picked partially because he didn't throw it in front of Lloyd far enough. Also on the long ball that Lloyd did catch, he under threw him again. Also on that play, props to Rahmir for getting on his horse to try to get Lloyd into the end zone.

I've said something similar but there are really 2 convos here. Are we wondering if we're a 10-2 or better team or a 7+ win team? IMO, we've been tested enough for me to be confident we're a 7+ win team. I'm more confident than that but I still want to see us play some B1G teams first, based on what you are bringing up. It was nice to see Colorado handle CSU in that at least they were able to win another game. We haven't been tested enough for me to feel confident we'll win 10 games. If we go 7-0 then I'll assume we can beat UCLA, Wisconsin, and Iowa.
