Iowa - What Did We Learn?

Up to before Dylan's fumble, I see 3 plays combined that lost this game in mind.  The weird touched punt. The long touchdown by Iowa. And the Neyor drop. You want to win you gotta be damn near perfect.

I'll give Iowa credit, they're content with the shoes they wear. Schedule weak a$$ non-con games, hope for a favorable con schedule, and play each game as conservatively as possible. That recipe has shown to get you 7-10 wins a year. And that's all they want. Good on them. They're better than Nebraska, but not by much. If Nebraska could ever just figure out doing the little things they would actually beat iowa by 2-3 touchdowns. 

Don’t forget the missed chip shot. Special teams gave a 6 point swing with the missed fg, muffed return in a game we lost by 3.  Should’ve been up 13-0 requiring Iowa to push for 2 TDs with more urgency. Instead we let them hang around once again once to cave with the game on the line

the easiest way to avoid one score losses is tk not be in so many f’n 1 score games.  Mediocre teams are inconsistent, the only consistent thing this program is is mediocre

Problem with this is, and is one of my few hates with Ruhle, he wants that close game.  When he said after the UCLA game that he wanted to get it to the 4th quarter and make a few more plays than them, I puked.  That was against the juggernaut 3-6 team.  

Go out with a plan and a mindset that you are going to bury and humiliate the opponent please

Yep, the urgency on this squad was severely lacking all season. Outside of Colorado and Wisconsin, we pretty much played to the level of the competition all year except for Indiana 

bigger picture, not even sure this year can be viewed as a step forward. We beat 2 teams with a winning record I believe? (Colorado and Rutgers, who Rutgers might finish 6-6).

I learned we may still finish our season with another losing record. 6-7 doesn’t feel any better than 5-7 

May? We will finish 6-7. No matter who we play, we will manage to play down to their level and hand them the game. Losing to a piss poor Iowa team tells you that this team has already settled with the fact that we are going to a bowl. That was their target. Finishing strong is not in their wish list. This is the mentality of soft, badly coached teams.

This is why Thomas can go as well.  UNLESS DR is listening to his private QB coach and disregarding any coaching from NU staff.  Then I'd look at moving on from DR.  

It is laughable when I hear people comparing Raiola to Mahomes. Mahomes is quick and has tremendous pocket awareness. In contrast, Raiola is sloth-like and has zero pocket awareness. He should not even be in the same conversation. Mahomes has the full respect of his team and he is a leader on the field. Raiola seems like he is indifferent. He had 4 chances to go down the field and win the game and in all 4 times, he either threw an interception, fumbled, or pissed his pants. How can his team respect his leadership. There is no intensity in his demeanor. Some will say that he is a teen and a freshman and still learning. I respond by reminding everyone that he had FOUR chances to show growth and he failed. Had he led the team to a win yesterday, we would say there is hope for next year but I am afraid he is who he is. We have seen this before. He is Adrian Martinez minus the speed. I would argue that Adrian had much more intensity.

He is still a freshman, fact. He has issues and made mistakes, fact. Both things can be true at the same time and can be talked about.  He has time to fix it and level up.  Next year is big for him, needs to take a step forward. Hard to be a fiery vocal leader as a freshman, but I expect that next year.

He can be much better than Adrian throwing, and I don't want him running like that.  He could stand to get more mobile for an occasional move the chains scramble though.

Good luck with that. Rhule is not the “let’s go dominate” type of coach and sadly his team has inherited this. We have zero killer instinct. Nick Saban willed his team into championships and his body language inspired confidence. Rhule will never be that. He looks confused and his team plays confused.

The biggest issue is in the bold. He shouldn’t have been viewed as a leader from day 1, he’s a kid. Where the hell are the upperclassmen making winning plays? O yah, for the most part they are nowhere to be found. Too much weight and expectations for a true freshman

I agree.  Raiola has Mahomes cockiness without the results.  He is slower than a turtle and panics when under pressure.  He can sure pass well but in college its important to have some mobility too and he struggles in this regard.  I am curious how DK would look in a game and if there will be an open competition heading into next season.  Hopefully Raiola will hit the cardio room and work on his diet and come back leaner and more mobile for next season.

If someone told you that one team had 334 total yards, 20 first downs, and possessed the ball for 39 minutes and the other had 164 total yards, 5 first downs, and 21 minutes of ball possession, which team would you think won the game? Well, for 98% of teams in FBS, it would be the first team, but we are Nebraska, our identity is to make the impossible possible. If it can’t be done, we will find a way to do it. Is it players, is it coaching? Is it a curse? Is it bad football culture? I choose all of the above. We need to start holding players and coaches responsible for their lack of performance and stop giving coaches bonuses for getting to a bowl. Getting to a bowl should be expected and should not be something an overpaid coach receives a bonus for. If we continue to reward mediocrity, all we will get is mediocrity. I just really hope that coach Rhule took his guys for ice cream and apple pie after yesterday’s performance. They really earned it. Their actions on the field yesterday were something we are proud of. NOT.

I would say that the bigger problem was not throwing to guys when they were wide open, not so much with his accuracy when he did make the throw. Maybe that's where we weren't talking about the same thing.

My point was just that he happily steered into the comparisons, and since he hasn't achieved similar results,  he's taking heat (definitely some of it unfair and ugly).
