Who's Leaving? 2024/25 version

And Rhule just went in depth at his press conference about how you hope really good OL are ready in year 3. We need a bridge guy or two for 2025.
I'm guessing we see some of these guys in the bowl.  We need Gottula to improve at LT or see Brix step in.  Sledge will most likely be the center.   I agree a couple plug & plays would be nice.

A reporter asked Holgorsen about the young guys and seeing them in the bowl, and the answer was the least comfortableI have seen him to date. He didn't answer whether we would see them, explicitly said "we need to bring some (portal) guys in," and talked about how Donovan Raiola had 6 guys he trusted - presumably Gottula, Jenkins, Scott, Lutovsky, Benhart, and Mazzccua. Don't hold your breath on seeing those guys.

I don't think it's truly that dire - returning Gottula, Lutovsky, and Jenkins (the likely Center IMO) is solid. And players will get better over the next 9 months. But they are going out of their way to throw cold water on the notion that we're just going to be able to plug Brix or Taumua or whoever in next year.

Mazzccua is out w/ torn labrum.

I didn’t come on this topic to bring a negative vibe, but until I hear positive remarks about how well Brix is coming along ( I may have missed them along the way this year), I stand by my belief when we got him, that he will not see the field until at least year 3 , if at all. I coached in the state of Iowa, and have seen him in athletics across the board. Just a big kid…. Great kid… not not sure he is a P4 starting OL. Hope I am wrong

He was the #4 HS tackle.  Appearantly, others feel he has the skills to be that good!

I completely understand what you are saying!!! The measurables are there. I get it. There is a reason that a lot of my Iowa coaching buddies gave me a hard time when he came to N. A lot of coaches over here were stunned at the ranking. Furthermore, the two in-state programs didn’t make strong runs for him. Iowa told him they were full. My belief is that if they truly thought he was the #4 OT, they would have found room for an in state guy… especially with their OL success in the NFL. I am just stating my opinion, and I can’t argue against your point about the recruiting services.

I think the issue with Brix is that he literally had zero pass blocking experience in HS.  No idea what kind of training he had in that department, but the lack of game experience surely put him behind.  Reminds me of a OT NU once recruited named Martez Ivey.  Athletic freak who played in a single wing offense.  By the time developed some skill as a pass blocker at UF he'd had several serious knee injuries.  That said, Brix was running ahead of Hood almost immediately, and Prozatchka was really raw as a pass blocker coming out of HS and contributed immediately.

I noticed Taumua on vid running wind sprints earlier in the year and I think it would take a herculean effort for him in S&C to be a contributor next season.

Just watched his film.  As a Jr., he was tall & thin. He added weight as Sr. & was listed at 285.  He has good ft. & is quick.  To me it looks like a good player on an average team.  Did not see any pass blocking & his recruiting profile says he needs to add strength. He was an early recruit, so he has an extra 6 months of S&C.  Plus, I like big guys that were wrestlers.

Taumua was coming off a knee injury correct?

Couldn’t agree more about the wrestling, but that is part of the reason I have formed my opinion. I watched him lose a match to one of our kids who was BAD.  Our kid out wrestled him for 2 periods then pinned him.  Our kid was BAD… I left thinking that no way a P4 guy should look that way on the mat. Lack of strength and center of gravity was so apparent. That is why I said it will take him 3-4 years here to be a true player. Again, I hope I am wrong and will gladly admit it. I am not trying to argue with anyone, just providing my insight and opinion.

I know your not but according to his bio he went to state in wrestling.  It appears like he is a late bloomer as he has put 50+ since his Jr. of HS.  He probably needs another year.  Regardless, hope he is ready to go soon.
