Why the infatuation with Turner Gill?

I'm in the camp of the original poster. Has Turner done a good job at Buffalo? Yeah, I guess. They went from awful to not-quite mediocre. Is that the best we can do?

Let's find a proven head coach, even if we have to dip to the mid-major or service academy levels. :)

Pretty hard to believe we have to do that since we're Nebraska, but the expectations from Nebraskans have been lowered considerably over the last 4 years.

The main thing is Gill might turn Buffalo around, but he hasn't yet. There are other coaches who have already turned programs around -- we have talked about them a number of times. It's too bad that this is only Gill's second season -- we just don't have a good enough read on him yet. I think all coach hires have risks, but Gill is clearly a higher risk at this time. I think you have to consider Pelini a bigger risk, too -- he's been a HC for just one game. But no matter how you look at it, each candidate will have some degree of risk.

Everyone is a big risk if you ask me. A&M went after the "safe" hire the last time when they landed a big name like Franchione. As far as I know, he'll be joining some others in the unemployment line.

I would rather take a risk, than simply try to go after a "safe" hire or big name. Pitt took "Stache" because he was a big name. Even though he's had little to no success at all being a HC, they still went for him because of the name recognition. He's a crappy coach, and he continues to show it. We went after a big name last time, and well we're in the same boat as Pitt. There is no homerun coach out there. Each and every candidate carries with him a certain amount of risk.

A friend of mine was a walk on at NU back in the 80's. He told me that everyone including walk on's have a window of opportunity. For many of the walk on's, the window might be small but it is there none the less. I feel the same way with coaches. Very few coaches who are viewed as greats moved from job to job. If TO would have coached at 2, 3, 4, or more programs; he probably wouldn't be viewed as one of if not the greatest college coach. I would rather take a big risk on an up and coming assistant who has been an assistant at a successful program than just taking someone who has a history of building up teams and then leaving. One of the things that made Nebraska so great was the amount of years of experience the staff had at the same program. People say in today's age this isn't possible. However, I'm not so sure I agree. Does anyone see Bob Stoops leaving OU? Rodriguez seems very happy at West Virginia. Beemer's been at Virginia Tech quite a while. Richt seems very at home in Georgia. The dedication of assistants like TO had may be gone, but I'm not so sure about the dedication of a HC to a school.

assistants and HC's move around more than ever, due to dissatisfied fans and in search of more money and opportunity, just the same way as in the business world, mercenaries are a big part of the landscape today, like or not, it isn't the same anymore, anywhere.

I'd like to see Turner as OC.

Tom wants people with good character. He's the man.

Pelini is too for HC.

I sure hope we're not disappointed. :ahhhhhhhh

I think Gill represents healing to alot of people. I say give him a chance. There is so much more to being a head coach than X's and O'x. We want the tradition of Nebraska football back along with the victories. Yeah, he may be a risk but he's going to have TO right by his side as he grows. Osborne didn't win a national championship for a long time after he was made head coach and the people didn't mind. This 'I want it all right now' mentality has got to stop somewhere. Turner represents everything that's right about college football. With the right support staff he will definetly make a difference in the lives of the boys he coaches.

P.S. Won't it just be the craps if Callahan somehow stays! Billy C. the NFL is the place for you.

Uh, you might want to rethink that line. During the '70s, and even into the '80s, Dr. Tom came under a lot of fire for not being able to win "the big one" - either a major bowl or a national championship. A pretty significant portion of the fan base wanted him gone. And it got bad enough that Dr. Tom considered leaving the Huskers.
