12-Team Playoff On the Way; 14-Team to Follow

I kind of get this and really the SEC has done two things really well...

1. They have marketed themselves as this conference that just cares so much more about football, mostly through how their fans take it so seriously. And there is some truth to that but then again, it is similar to the Big Ten except the Big Ten has a few schools where the students don't even know the school has a football team.

2. That non-conference game that SEC teams toss in late in the season, that was brilliant. Instead of doing them all at the start of the season. That was a smart move.

Multiple automatic conference slots will really hurt the regular season and goes against the spirit of earning a playoff spot IMO. Ten win teams can sit their starters the last couple games. The B1G looks bad continuing to push this.

I'm not a fan of the committee either, but I haven't seen a better proposal. I still think eight teams (5+3) is better than the other options I've heard.

I guess it's possible. But I don't think it will play out that way. Especially not in the B1G.

The B1G wants to do a big play in weekend - an expansion of the conference championship game. Possibly six teams playing on that last weekend with playoff spots on the line. Teams will be playing for position in that weekend. I don't think any of them will be sitting starters.

Even it other conferences don't do that - and it's really only the SEC that would have the chance to - they would still be playing for a place in the CCG. The only way that could play out is if there are two SEC teams locked into the CCG with a couple of weeks left to play. It's possible, but seems unlikely. And, even if that happens, it's only a couple of games out of dozens.

Doesn't seem likely to have a significant effect.

I disagree. Teams that are locked into the play-in games can sit their starters the last regular season games - it would be stupid not to do that - so starters sitting is just as likely. And it will make the CCG almost meaningless since both teams are getting into the playoff anyways.

Both teams in the CCG for the B1G and SEC will be in the playoff under either proposal

I don't know that any exact plans have been announced for how this would work. But one would think that seeding would still be favorable. And, thus, teams still wanting to win to improve seeding.

That's a good point. The CCG became almost meaningless once they went past 4 teams (maybe 8).

Both Oregon and Penn State were in the Playoff before the B1G Championship last year. Did either rest their starters or consider the game meaningless?
Both Texas and Georgia were in the Playoff before the SEC Championship last year. Did either rest their starters or consider the game meaningless?

No, but it's coming. College football playoffs are slowly beginning more like the NFL, it's just a matter of time until starters sit just like the NFL.
