Rhule finally feels like the "right coach" for Nebraska

Bo had some great coaching attributes and was hamstringed by some fatal flaw ones. He had a great developmental program, was somewhat of an X's and O's savant at least for a while, demanded good program discipline if not always in-game discipline, recruited and developed quality kids into quality men, and had a great ability to evaluate talent others were missing. But he also was (and thus had a team that was) psychologically fragile, with meltdowns, tightness and lack of adjustments being commonplace.

Guy said it best a while back, what looked like 'fire' on the sidelines was more so just a lack of control.

He also benefited greatly coming in after Callahan and caught the Big XII North and the B1G when they were fairly down. Does anyone honestly think Bo would have a 9 win floor if he came in after Riley and Frost with the quality of this league now? Callahan left him cupboards absolutely stacked with raw talent.
I think this is the best concise analysis of Bo's coaching. With more self control and willingness to adjust, I think he could have been a great coach. There was a lot to like about him. But he had some serious flaws that really placed a ceiling on the team.

I hope he's the right coach and wins a Natty/s and stays for a long time so people can stop bringing up Bo freakin Pelini every year.

And Frank freakin' Solich. et al..

I'm with you. But I plead guilty. Some of it is comparison stuff.. I mean, they are our coaches over time.. we're going to hash out comparisons.

My god yes.

I don't know recruiting all that well but some the best guys Bo had, in no order, were

Suh
RG
David
Crick
Gomes
Haag
Prince
Asante
Lewis
AA
Rex
There were two good TE's but I forget their names
VV
Those Twin DT's
Tmart

I have no idea who recruited all those guys but my guess is Bo recruited close to 50%.

I could be totally wrong as usual, but I don't mind being wrong.

I mean, you're missing some pretty key players, and attributing some of Riley's players, but let's break it down with a little less subjectivity. Just looking at drafted players (which obviously misses some guys like T-Mart), knapplc broke some of this down back in 2018.

This is going to be SUPER unscientific, and I'm anticipating being corrected on some of this stuff so have at it, but I thought it'd be interesting to take a look at the guys who were inherited by Solich, Callahan, Pelini & Riley based on players taken in the Draft.

I'm always one of the first to say that college talent doesn't necessarily translate into NFL talent, especially from Osborne's recruits. Tommie Frazier and Eric Crouch are two fantastic examples. So this doesn't necessarily prove anything.

There are going to be two main factors affecting a guy in the Draft: Talent & Coaching. You recruit raw talent, and you develop refined talent through coaching.

Yes, I am jumping the gun a little on this and yes, I will edit it once the Draft is over.

Now it seems that even the games he won were not "good wins"

"Well, he was down big to Iowa and had to come back to win that game". I guess that doesn't count???

With NIL and Rev Sharing...and I know this will make people mad...Bo would THRIVE in the transfer portal.

Plus, face it, his one "issue" was Wisconsin and they SUCK now.
But where Bo would not have thrived was in the review booth, which was just coming in as he was exiting. The game is so ticky tacky now and everything can, and will be reversed. Bo’s teams were not disciplined enough to survive the booth.

I've said for a long time that people go a long ways out of their way to avoid giving Bo any credit but this is taking it to a whole new level.

What? Replay review has been in college football since 2005.

Not what I said. I said I don’t think he gets those wins now. He obviously got them and deserved them at the time.

He was a winning coach for a short period of time.
