Akron: What did we learn?

I learned the only player lost to the portal NU will miss is Dowdell.

I guess I'd say that I'm really missing Jamari Butler and Princewill.

The problem with removing the undergraduate transfer rule that existed pre-2020 is that Power 4 schools are just playing musical chairs with players at the end of each season.

Make it stop. Bring back the undergrad transfer rule to save college football.

I don't know if this is just in my head or if anyone else noticed it. But when the backup RB's got carries with the Ones in the first two games they looked scared/tentative. But when they got carries with the twos against Akron they seemed to be running with more vigor. Maybe because they are used to running with those guys??

I noticed some of that as well. Hopefully that means they will improve as they get more first string reps.

Anyone go to the game? Was the beer cold?

My daughter said it was the normal amount of drunk people and she bought a $12 a s the line moved well with that “god knows what you owe” type purchasing. The only thing was they did not allow her 9 year old daughter to standing line with her so she had to stand behind the plexiglass partition.

She said that ran out of many food items and that people were pretty upset.
I was there and everything pretty much seemed the same as every other year.

I did hear that they ran out of some pizza though!

Comfortability may be a factor, but there was also a noticeable difference between the push and gaps Nebraska's offensive lines were creating against Akron vs. what they were doing against Cincy. I think it's a big deal as a back when you know where the gap is supposed to be and can see it opening before you like a highway vs. what tends to happen against better defensive lines where those gaps close fast or are non-existent.

Helps a lot with confidence or "vigor" when you know what you're about to do is working and the other guys just can't stop it.

Dylan didn't make the chart this week because for some reason Nebraska stats were updated late in the various systems. His PFF grade (85.9) and his QBR (89.4) would put him in the upper right quadrant, probably really close to Demond Williams of UW.

(And check out Sorsby...)

I went to a game last season with my son and planned to buy him his first Runza at the game. Stood in line for quite awhile before being told they'd run out of Runzas in the third quarter.

If you're in the business of making money, I have no idea why you'd prevent people from handing it to you.

Lessons Learned:
1. The 2nd & 3rd team guys did well.
2. The O Line did not do well against a goal defense running between the guards.
3. Our receivers have great hands.
4. Our D-backs are very good.
5. Our Aussie punter needs to have a backup position, so he gets some playing time.
6. At times, our play calling for runs was weak.
7. Ives needs to run to holes for yardage. He cut off a blocker once and turned the wrong way several times. He has speed.
8. We need more miss-direction designed plays.
9. AKRON is not Michigan, Iowa, Ohio State, Indiana, USC, Oregon, Purdue or Penn State. We're happy now because our weaknesses don't show against Akron.

I don't know how Aussie-rules football differs from Rugby, but they have to have drop kicks right? Should've let him drop kick an extra point, or I'm sure he could just straight up kick it.

It's probably been said, but it was important for NU to p*ss-pound Akron. It's not necessarily a sign of good things on the horizon; but NOT pounding an overmatched opponent has almost ALWAYS been a sign of bad things to come.

Not counting the actual losses to Troy, UNI, and GaSouthern, NU has often struggled to put away teams like this. That usually spelled trouble for the rest of the season.

Don't play with your food...just eat and move on. That's what NU did.

I don't think there's any realistic scenario that anyone ever passes Joe Ganz' 510 yards against KSU in '07, but ignoring the stats and just focusing on the mastery/execution of the position, it'd be hard to argue that's not the best passing performance in school history. Dylan's timing, placement and command of the ball in that game is something we haven't ever really seen anything close to before. Kudos to the kid.

As far as I can tell, it's the first time in school history we shutout an opponent and didn't punt once. They're an atrocious team but being 2-0 winning a tight game against a P4 opponent and steamrolling a cupcake paycheck opponent with mostly flawless execution is something we haven't seen in a long while and I'm glad to enjoy it immensely not taking it for granted and acting like it's our birthright.
