Huskers O-Line

Looking at our size, on average, it's 319 pounds. Not bad, considering it's a bit above the Big 10 average weight of 314, and the same as the SEC of 319. Good sized boys to cause a fine running game, and to protect our quarterback from being sacked... it seems.

Size means a lot in line play, O and D. But of course training and coaching mean a lot, too. The published statement about our O-Line in July was: "The Nebraska Cornhuskers' starting offensive linemen are projected to average around 319 pounds for the 2025 season, based on a July 2025 report. This size indicates that the unit is expected to be one of Nebraska's largest and most experienced offensive lines in recent years."
And:
Key details about the 2025 offensive line:
  • Average Weight: 319 pounds
  • Experience: The unit is described as experienced.
  • Key Players: Teddy Prochazka and Turner Corcoran are mentioned as key players contributing to this size.

Nothing about Coach Donovan Raiola there.

Some discussion about all this, expectations vs reality of playing against a determined "blue blood program in the Big 10 Conference," would interest some of us. Is this about coaching? Is it about too early to say much? Why did we gain next to nothing in the run against Michigan here in our stadium?

Etc...

4-5 years of the same ineptitude under the same coach points to a coaching issue

Can’t recall what podcast it was but they said Nebraska has had subpar tackle play going for a decade now. We’ve had no issue developing the interior with guards and centers but we’ve failed miserably in the Tackle spots.

The most concerning part to me was that Michigan wasn’t really bringing extra guys. Many of those sacks and pressures came against 3 to 4 man fronts. If you can’t block 3-4 man rushes with 5 lineman you’re in a world of hurt.

Also, anytime I read “turner corcoran” and key guy mentioned in the same sentence I’m f’n scared lol. When will this guy finally be out of the program, he must be pushing 30 years old by now

Teddy isn’t fat at all and he was terrible against Michigan
I respect teddy given everything he’s been thru injury wise. That said, I think those injuries have piled up to the point where he’s simply not mobile enough to be a starting Tackle at the level we need. Our tackles seem to be too slow and can’t really move the line, it be nice if only one of those statements were true

Listening to some sports talk today. They said as a whole, isn't it just the tackles that are struggling? Michigan may be the best front 7 we face this year, sans PSU>

We've got some huge beasts on the O line. Size isn't the problem.

When Frost was finally fired, VIP's who had attended practices throughout his tenure finally felt like it was appropriate to comment on what they saw when they were there. And if I recall correctly, there was info to be gleaned there that suggested that Frost didn't have the 1's on defense going up against the 1's on offense nearly as much as he should have.

Someone else can chime in if they think that's revisionist history.

But my point is, even if Rhule did have the 1's go up against the 1's during camp and in practice currently as much as he should, just look at our defensive line compared to Michigan. All of that contributes to your O line's muscle memory for the speed of the game.

Meaning, if you're going up against cream puffs in practice, when you go up against the real dawgs on Saturdays you get smoked.

I was bring him up as an example of someone who isn’t fat and is a big part of the problem.

Yeah.

You could argue he's actually too tall. And then I think you could also argue that the guy just hasn't really played many meaningful downs at tackle in college prior to the Cincinnati game because of all of his injury history.

So, he might progress a lot as the season goes on here. Or he might not.

Bring "The Pit" back!

What happens in the pit, stays in the pit. I believe that is what it was called. The area under the old East Stadium where the DL and the OL battled each other.

I think we may be too soft. That may be the problem.

I was wondering that on Saturday. He actually seemed to be getting in good position (most of the time). But he was just getting pushed straight back a lot. I couldn't help but wonder if he just gives up too much leverage because of his height.

As opposed to the LTs we were running out there who seemed to be getting beat by guys going around them.

Was thinking about this last night watching the chiefs game. The announcers made a few comments regarding Oline spacing really tightening up so nothing could come through the middle of the line. Of course they then relied on Pat making the outside guys miss here and there but it seemed to work... at least against the giants.
