This is the thing I noticed the most. It was never the same issues every play or every game. Sometimes the line would get pushed around, sometimes they'd be in the backfield but not in position to make a play. Sometimes the backers would burst through and just whiff, or they would take poor angles. Sometimes backers would fill but get washed out by a blocker. Sometimes times backers just didn't flow to the ball with enough urgency, other times they over pursue and the cutbacks are wide open (counter plays just killed us). Then in pass coverage we never got home and teams would run a corner route or a deep out and lob it over the backers head to a wide open guy on the sidelines.

Let’s not forget too soon…we got simply outcoached for sure on our defense against MN, PSU, and Iowa. Our defense was so out leveraged and unable to adjust in all 3 of those games so badly, it was obvious in the first quarter. There is a reason the DL or the LBs were having the problems you discussed:
The other team picked us apart in our scheme. Add that to being overmatched physically and we just got GASHED a lot this year.
We were out leveraged in scheme and didn’t quite have the horses to make a play individually
