Dylan Raiola

Bad bad?

TJ didn't have much chance against USC and had a couple promising scrambles prior to an uncharacteristic stumble by Emmett Johnson that would have given him another set of downs. He did not look bad against Penn State in his second start against a much better team. Pretty good decision making, some genuinely nice throws, and no turnovers but the big early deficit put the offense in catch-up mode. Iowa was the kind of team-wide clusterfunk that every Nebraska QB has suffered through. Late in the game Lateef missed several open receivers that Raiola probably would have hit, but it's a stretch to think a healthy Dylan changes the outcome, or that a stout Husker defense wouldn't have helped Lateef and the rest of the offense play a better scheme.
Bingo, you said it here. Understandable to miss a throw here or there, but he was missing several basic passes to open receivers in both the Penn State & Iowa games. He also enjoyed better pass protection than Dylan had. Maybe "bad, bad" was a stretch, but if he can't run and then he can't make the basic throws, he's not going to win us any games.

You obviously are struggling to read sentences in full.

Neither TJ nor Dylan were redshirted, neither were intended to be from what I understood. Go back and watch the game film. Dylan is a far superior QB and has been since he got here in the Spring of 2024.

If you're suggesting that Dylan Raiola was a better quarterback than his true freshman back up, gosh, I hope so.

At this point we're just wondering if Lateef is the promising recruit we thought he might be, and if an extra year of experience and an OC building a scheme around his skills might produce something that will make us miss Dylan a lot less.

In fairness, that same Dylan Raiola looked pretty bad against better teams his freshman year, too. And reasonable people might wonder if the same TJ Lateef doesn't get sacked nine times and lose to Minnesota just a couple months ago.

Some people are saying he was a good recruiter but that is where I was disappointed.

What top recruits came here bc DR was here?
We got visits but not a lot of commits.

Maybe peer recruiting is over valued on an internet board

I don't see why Sorsby would come here when he could go to a more stable, presently stronger program.
Because that stuff is a distant second to how much money a player can make. Stability, stronger program, tradition, etc. only matter if the schools are offering the same amount of money. The concept of recruiting players on stuff that isn't money is basically dead at this point, especially for the transfer portal.

Although my guess is that Emmett Johnson could get more money as a returning Senior and Heisman hopeful at NU than as a rookie running back in the NFL.

the NFL retirement benefits require you to be in the league a certain number of years before you are eligible for them. getting into the league early before your body is destroyed gives him a better chance of eventually qualifying.

i read that as TJ is less mobile than Adrian was
Why would we be comparing him to a QB that has been gone for 4 yrs... ??

No, you're just having a hard time comparing a kid with two starts against a kid who has played for 2 yrs.. We get it, you will miss Dylan and that great fade cut but he wasn't the bees knees and my guess is he will continue to struggle where he lands... continue to try and make your point if you'd like...

I've been wondering this as well. Guaranteed money to be a college star vs taking the chance on a rookie contract in the NFL. It's not clear cut like it was previously.

SI Article from earlier this year (maybe a month ago) talked about EJ leaving for draft or staying. The gist was RB’s are not getting top dollar in the NIL deals. He’d stand to make close to or slightly over 2 million on a rookie contract in year 1 if he’s drafted and signs at a minimum. Won’t make that with NIL. Unsure how true. Trying to find factual numbers is tough.

True but it cuts both ways. Plenty of promising college RBs end up with practice squad careers and no eligible NFL benefits. I think EJ is making the right move for multiple reasons. But big NIL money can let you have the best of both worlds, or at least give you pause before declaring.

I get that to a degree, but potential for development and looks for NFL will continue to play a role.

Yeah he probably can't match the average NFL rookie contract, although EJ would have been the single most popular player on the team and thus one of the most popular celebrities in the state, especially if part of a national Heisman campaign. That could earn you some coin.

I just realized I may not understand NIL quite right. I think we're talking about direct payment to players from University booster funds with no services required beyond playing football there. Is that separate from player negotiated endorsements from local businesses, national sports brands, and in the case of Sanders brothers, fine international watches? The latter would seem to apply better to Name, Image and Likeness income, but does NIL just mean any money you give a student (ha!) athlete?
