Portal QBs

So are there any portal QBs besides Chiles that we are actively pursuing?
According to On3 we are after the following- note that things may change.

Aiden Chiles (MSU)
Kenny Minchey (Notre Dame)
Dylan Lonergan (Boston College)

We also have to at least be interested in Colton Joseph (ODU) and Jaden Craig (Harvard). Could also see them go after Katin Houser from ECU since he has only one year left. Expect us to take two transfer QBs plus a JUCO or Freshman.

So out of those, Chiles and Minchey would be considered dual threat, Houser possibly and the others as more traditional "pocket passer" QB's. Tj dual threat, Davila traditional and in portal, Trae dual threat....I know Dana said get the best available and we could scheme around talent, but it seems like we would try to define our scheme and recruit to that. Not recruit a singular position and then change scheme to fit that one guy....

You should add Colton Joseph to dual threat. Jaden Craig has the ability to run but I would not put him as dual threat.

I agree with you go with best available. This schedule is too difficult to try and get a few backups to go with Lateef. The focus is on dual threat QB's but don't be surprised if they get a pocket guy.

This is my assumption of what we do for the QB position for 2026

Transfer
TJ
Back up transfer (Zane Flores?) who will have the opportunity to complete
Freshman or Juco for depth
Bode Soukup and Luke L.

Agree 100000%. This is not high school! I coached for over 25 yrs and yes, at times we must adapt to the hs kids that we have to play to their strengths. Maybe the fist year or two after you take over a program and inherit players, you may have to tweak your system to play to the incumbent player’s strengths, but after you build your roster and staff, you NO LONGER adapt, you develop, keep and recruit to YOUR IDENTITY. This statement by Dana drove me nuts and concerned me at the same time.

So you recruited high school kids?

Virtually all coaches make adjustments based on team strengths. Very few programs have the recruiting clout to just bring in their style of guys exclusively.

I know a lot of people are out on Chiles but keep in mind that a lot of this has to do with cost and if he's being brought in to compete with Lateef, not a guaranteed starter. Chiles could be great at the right price as a backup.

Recruited HS kids????? Ok, why not just say you want to argue or start trash talk, but my post was obviously absolutely apparent that in HS you don’t recruit kids, so you must adapt to what you have. Holy cow!!

If you have a true identity and a system you believe in and have the ability to recruit, you go after guys who fit your system! How hard of a concept is that? If you are a zone read team, you don’t recruit pocket passers.

I disagree on very few teams have that clout! Most teams will absolutely go after guys who fit. Maybe one of the most used phrases in recruiting is “he doesn’t fit our system”…That doesn’t mean that your pocket passer can’t be mobile. If you want a dual threat QB, you don’t go after a non mobile pocket passer and vice versa.

as long as we spend more on improving our lines than we spend on QB's i will be content that we are doing the right thing.

If you go back and read your post it maybe wasn't as clear as you intended.

There wasn't a college team out there that wouldn't have taken Raiola out of high school. When a top 5 QB wants to go to your school, you develop around his strengths. Of course teams try to recruit kids that fit their system but often they settle on the best available that is willing to play there and make adjustments to fit their current roster talent. Look at the varied systems Alabama had through their championship years... same with Ohio State.

I am not being “defensive “ here at all. I absolutely would have recruited DR and he probably fit what Rhule and Sat wanted. But then you replace Sat…. What does MR want? Does he want an OC to call an offense that utilizes a pocket passers who is mobile (which in my guess… this would be TJ type, bc TJ is not a true dual threat like some have labeled him) or does he want a true dual threat guy? Serious question. That wil dice who they should pursue. I am stating that you need to recruit the guys who can do exactly what you are looking for rather than constantly changing your identity with every recruiting cycle, depending on who you “end up with”. That is why I don’t agree with Dana saying he will go after best available, if the best available doesn’t fit our system

I also assume most people have not seen him play really outside of the one game vs us which obviously he looked pretty bad.

List of some of the notable teams needing QBs next year, and looking at Transfer Portal QBs that we are competing with.

Texas Tech
Indiana
LSU
Miami
Clemson
Florida
Tennessee
Auburn (new USF coach; likely Byrum Brown USF QB)
FSU
Georgia Tech
Penn State (HC Matt Campbell; Likely Rocco)
Louisville (possibly Raiola)
Virginia Tech (Franklin HC)
Arizona State
Missouri
TCU
Arkansas
Baylor
Mississippi State
Boston College
North Carolina State
Iowa State
Cincinnati
West Virginia
iLLinois
Michigan State (HC Fitzgerald)
Ole Miss (if Chambliss doesn't get 6th year Med Rshrt)

That's a lot of competition for the top 2 tiers of transfer QBs who will be available (and likely high priced / some over priced for sure)

Among these 27 teams is it reasonable to believe we rank around 8-10 in terms of NIL we’re willing to spend?
