2025-2026 Portal Updates

My guess is the lower half of the D1 schools start looking at forming a new Division. They won't be able to compete with facilities, coaching, or players. Why pretend they have a chance at playing at making a playoff game? Each year they'll play for nothing but big school payouts for easy games. The generals to the Harlem Globetrotters.
The problem is, the problem is way bigger than just with the lower half of D1. If they would break off, that doesn't alleviate the need to put rules in place for the upper half.

I could see a handful of schools dropping football to spend less money for better returns on basketball. Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, maybe Kansas, etc. The non-football team programs that make runs in the tournament like Gonzaga, etc might be able to outspend these historic BB programs since they are wasting money on mediocre football programs. They can toss $20 million at men's and women's basketball/volleyball, and play all the games at the same new indoor stadium complex built on the old football stadium.

NIL might change the way schools think of their programs as a whole. Dropping football also frees up Title IX commitments and allows schools to cut even more side sports to focus their programs.

They could hire Trev Alberts as a consultant on how and what to cut.

That still wouldn't fix the issues facing college football.

There is zero chance of this happening.
Why not? Nebraska could win every national championship for a decade if they put Rhule's salary and the football team's NIL money to men's and women's basketball and volleyball.

$10-20 million a year for each of those teams would buy all the top players in the country. If we can't win at football, may as well win at something else.

We wouldn't win basketball championships even with that, and we're already top of the food chain for volleyball. I think our volleyball program is still the only one turning a profit, and only a handful of women's basketball teams do. I don't think our women's bball team would turn a profit even if they were legitimate title contenders, it's a bad investment. Basketball makes money but not like football does.

Because then men's basketball would be the only sport they have at the university.
