Much better punt returner. Barney is kind of a crafty fella with better lateral speed and is an improviser which seems to translate better to punt returns. I think Williams has better vision along with very good speed which = better kick returner.

For sure, so why did we set up our kick returns such that Barney got 13 to Williams' 12? I understand we run a 2-returner scheme, but I have to imagine Ekeler is smart enough to figure out how to funnel the ball to Williams. I am very sure there are teams that can promise him more than 12 kick returns and probably promise him some kind of role on offense. It sucks to see him go, but if the coaches don't feel like he should be out there on offense and aren't willing to commit to getting him the ball as a returner it's best for both to move on. Some teams will pay for a return specialist, theoretically we are paying Ekeler and recruiting athletes so we don't have to.

Side note -I doubt this had anything directly to do with entering the portal, but it rubbed me the wrong way when Rhule kept going out of his way to talk about the 2 all-Americans in the RB room. Either give the "other" all-American the ball more or stop bringing it up.

Wondering if this is another Wan'Dale situation, where we're trying to convince the player that the upcoming season will be different and we won't play them out of position. But then we fail to find guys to fill those roles an shove them back to RB/DT instead of WR/Edge until they finally say enough. Hoping this staff is smarter than the last one on that front.

I think he got dinged up in the middle of the season, correct? But, I was always wondering why Barney was returning kicks at the end of the year.

Yep. When you see those stats, you think you’re getting a really piece on defense. Then you realize he is 5’8 and gets picked on all the time so he has had chances to make plays. Sometimes he makes them, sometimes he does not. But he does compete, which has been a hard issue for players the last 14yrs.
